Partnerships Promote Inclusion

A university and a secondary school collaborate to decrease dropout rates and increase college enrollment

Abstract: American industries, professional organizations, individual companies, and higher education institutions continue to struggle to attract employees from underrepresented populations. Future-forward thinking is required to ensure a multicultural workforce. The authors, a design educator at a predominantly white, Midwestern university, and a high school principal at a multicultural urban school district, developed an intentional collaboration—partnerships between secondary and postsecondary institutions—to bridge the gap. In this article, they share strategies they developed for recruiting and retaining underrepresented students through intentional planning and design of competency-based, personalized learning models.

What Higher Education Can Learn From IT Business Continuity Planning

This discussion will examine how IT continuity activities can both inform and adapt to institutional strategies and needs during COVID-19, or any crisis.
Abstract: Contingency planning is key to dealing with the ongoing change and interruptions institutions will need to manage during the COVID-19 pandemic. But many universities do not have adequate contingency plans or lack the ability to quickly adapt their plans to uncertain circumstances. IT has been creating and implementing business continuity plans for years, and IT leaders are some of the few people that see across the entire organization. This discussion will examine how IT continuity activities can both inform and adapt to institutional strategies and needs during a crisis.

We will explore ways that a design thinking process can build a visible culture of sustainability at the hyper-local campus scale and drive climate action across academics, governance, and operations. Aligning climate action with existing priorities creates synergies, especially where stakeholders may already be stretched thin. Learn how a design thinking approach facilitates this type of cross-disciplinary work.

Facility Data Drives Funding and $450 Million Capital Program

Abstract: Tracking and communicating data in a compelling way can make big, positive changes in how the facility inventory is managed, from annual maintenance to capital expenditures. We will describe how the Alamo Colleges uses principles of asset management to increase facilities funding from $1.3 to $18.5 million over 10 years and to pass a $450 million bond program in 2017. We will cover how we planned and organized a facilities inventory, using the data to determine funding priorities, and methods for helping stakeholders make decisions.
