Planning and Implementing the Sustainable Campus of the Future

Integrated planning and design that optimizes development capacity and leverages campus growth can help institutions achieve ambitious resilience goals for net-zero energy and resource conservation for a healthier, more sustainable environment. This session will discuss Princeton University’s ongoing efforts to support an ambitious capital plan, address deferred maintenance, advance climate solutions, and maximize use of campus lands. The path to a sustainable campus future will require institutions to go beyond business-as-usual planning to rethink campus infrastructure—particularly energy, stormwater, and landscapes—and activate high-performance sites and buildings.

Decarb Buy-in: Creating a Culture of Decarbonization

Decarbonization requires thinking big and working together. Universities are uniquely positioned to model innovative planning approaches to decarbonization, revealing what’s possible at different scales, from individuals to broader organizations.
Abstract: Decarbonization sits at the nexus of integrated planning. Gain buy-in by engaging students, faculty, staff, industry partners, and the broader community across all campus facets to create a culture of decarbonization that yields tangible outcomes. Decarbonization requires thinking big and working together. Universities are uniquely positioned to model innovative planning approaches to decarbonization, revealing what’s possible at different scales, from individuals to broader organizations. Attendees will gain tools for implementing decarbonization plans aligned with institutional missions. Esports Streaming Gives the University of Kentucky a New Way to Grow Revenue and Recruit Students

The University of Kentucky understood the importance of technology in preparing students for the digital world. With public-private partnerships, it sought opportunities to be an industry leader in leveraging that capacity for its students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Abstract: The University of Kentucky (UK) and the University of Kentucky Esports Club worked together to establish the University of Kentucky Esports Lounge. Students were surveyed on their gaming needs, and the resulting wish list (i.e., equipment selection, space configuration, furniture, etc.) fed into the decision-making process by all constituents. The project budget was derived by a larger construction project at the University that focused on student recruitment, community, and connection to the non-student demographic. The UK team ultimately planned and launched the custom facility to meet users’ particular needs—while finding a way for the University to produce an additional revenue stream.

Learn how bringing a program back to campus can provide your institution with opportunities for reinforcing or changing campus culture, building partnerships, and enhancing program integration.
Abstract: Students who participate in off-campus programs frequently desire more on-campus integration, but limited financial resources require creative solutions to optimize space utilization and effectiveness. Eastern Michigan University’s College of Business has been located off campus in downtown Ypsilanti since 1991. Abstract: We’re living in challenging times and other crises are sure to follow. Having the proper skills and culture will mean the difference between success and failure. This session will introduce you to concepts about preparing for this adversity. Institutional leaders often rely on ineffective processes for crisis management, but we’ll provide you with a framework and tools that will allow you to more constructively navigate crises. We don’t learn from our experiences—we learn from reflecting on them. Come share and reflect on your experiences with your peers and learn a new framework to help you lead in a crisis.
