Pursuing Carbon Neutrality Through Campus Master Planning

Climate commitments and carbon neutrality are becoming top priorities for many campuses.
Abstract: Climate commitments and carbon neutrality are becoming top priorities for many campuses. Since building engineering systems account for seventy-to-eighty percent of carbon production, all campus stakeholders are contributors to the future success of emissions goals. Despite established infrastructure, reliance on city utilities, high deferred maintenance, and financial constraints, the University of Louisville (UofL) is pursuing carbon neutrality and is on track to achieve a sixty percent reduction by 2030 and one hundred percent by 2050. This session will share necessary master planning strategies for pursuing carbon neutrality at the campus level, emphasizing the need for rigorous, multi-disciplinary stakeholder engagement.

Next we consider implications for university research, curriculum, and teaching, then envision how relationships between campuses, their local communities, and the world. We conclude by outlining ways academic institutions can strategize and plan for medium- and long-term transformation, starting now.

The Living Community Challenge, Master Planning, and a Bayfront Research Campus

We will demonstrate how we used an LCC-focused master planning process for a bayfront site to integrate facilities conditions, programming, site analyses, impacts of climate change and sea level rise, and net-positive energy and water.
Abstract: This session will discuss how we used the Living Community Challenge (LCC) to frame master planning for San Francisco State University's Romberg Tiburon Campus. LCC is a next-generation approach to sustainable and resilient planning and design, with aggressive energy and water goals. We will demonstrate how we used an LCC-focused master planning process for a bayfront site to integrate facilities conditions, programming, site analyses, impacts of climate change and sea level rise, and net-positive energy and water for more healthy and productive research and learning environment.
