The University of Arkansas (UA) boasts multiple built mass timber projects with two others heading for groundbreaking this spring. In this important environmental and economic initiative for both the university and the state, the collaboration between the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design and UA Facilities Management is transforming the campus into a national “greenhouse” for mass timber design, construction, and project management. This symposium will highlight UA’s collective efforts to advance mass timber education and campus projects as well as discuss the ripple effect this has had on forestry, mass timber, and wood products in Arkansas.
Come learn about the future of mass timber in campus design and planning from the design teams, campus planning team, and members of the Fay Jones School’s leadership and faculty that have made UA’s mass timber projects a success. We’ll share projects on the boards, including the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation and the Institute for Innovative and Integrative Research (I3R). As part of this all-day program, we’ll also take you on a walking tour of the campus where you’ll explore two mass timber projects, Adohi Hall and the Library Annex buildings.
Learning Outcomes- Identify the current design stages of the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation and the Institute for Innovative and Integrative Research (I3R) buildings.
- Discuss how UA has successfully incorporated mass timber construction into its campus plan and how you can translate these sustainable building practices into your own campus plan.
- Explain the economic development impact at the campus, regional, and state level as a direct outcome of a mass timber focus.
- Apply lessons learned both from campus planning and project teams to your own campus plan and avoid similar pitfalls.
