Matthew Bernstine

Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis

Matthew Bernstine, AICP, LEEPAP, is an award winning urban designer, planner, and educator. In his current role as the Associate director of the Sam Fox School’s Office for Socially Engaged Practice, he leads collaborative, socially engaged initiatives and supports practices in art, architecture, and design. He is also a lecturer for graduate-level courses in the fields of, urban sustainability, informal urbanism, urban design research methods, and community design. Bernstine worked for over a decade in the private sector as an urban designer prior to serving as the senior urban designer and planner for WashU.

He works to integrate practice, community-participation, and scholarship and has done so through collaborative endeavors including: Peace Park, Sumner StudioLab, & Mobility for All by All initiative. In recent years, he has served on the boards of the St. Louis Metro American Planning Association, St. Louis Regional Data Alliance, and St. Louis City’s Community Mobility Committee.
