John Perry
Senior Principal
SmithGroup
John Perry is a Senior Principal in campus planning at SmithGroup. He works
throughout the United States to develop campus plans that support the academic
mission and vision, enhance sense of place, and embed climate action and
sustainability strategies that help universities meet their energy and decarbonization
goals. As a licensed landscape architect, he is adept at large-scale conceptual master
planning efforts and with detailed design and implementation. His work has received
recognition from SCUP and the American Society of Landscape Architects.John believes that each institution has its own story, history, and path forward, and that
our goal is to help make them more inclusive and flexible, while strengthening their
vision for the future. In his work, he is most passionate about the translation of data,
community input, and client needs into physical design solutions that are beautiful,
uniquely tailored, and culturally responsive to each institution. Some of his recent work
includes planning at North Carolina State University, Vanderbilt University, Yale
University, Auburn University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, California
State University Chico, Kansas State University, Northwestern University, and Clemson
