James Sloat
Associate Provost and Associate Dean of Faculty
Colby College
James M. Sloat is Associate Provost and Associate Dean of Faculty at Colby College, where he has served for eight years.Trained as a political philosopher at Duke, Dr. Sloathas an administrative portfolio that is intentionally broad, including (at various times) strategic planning, faculty development, curriculum support, student academic support, academic facilities and technology, academic programming and scheduling, oversight of academic administrative support, event management, governance, diversity climate, assessment, athletics/academics, and communication.Drawing on campus-wide relationships, Jim has played a pivotal role in implementing Colby’s academic response to COVID by collaborating with partners across the campus.Beyond Colby’s campus, he founded the New England Small College Associate Deans and is a frequent presenter on the work of associate deans as institutional leaders “from the middle.”Prior to Colby,Jim served at Washington & Jefferson College and Dickinson College.He did his undergraduate work at Washington and Lee University.
