Regional Council Professional Development Chair – All Regions

 

Position Overview

SCUP’s regional councils are at the heart of our community and connection. Overseeing programmatic exchanges, people connections, and volunteer and leadership development, the regional councils are helping the higher education community learn more about planning at the grassroots level. Each regional council’s work supports SCUP’s strategic plan adopted by the board of directors.

The professional development chair assumes leadership of the regional professional development team. The professional development chair and their team coordinate the development of the program for the annual regional conference, one-day events, lunch-n-learns, symposiums, etc.

  • Tenure: Three-year term, with the opportunity for reappointment for a second term. After a second term, the professional development chair may serve in a different role as a SCUP Volunteer.
  • Volunteer time: 1 to 5 hours per month

About Selection

The regional chair appoints the professional development chair. 

Committee Structure

Each SCUP Regional Council consists of a chair, a membership chair, a professional development chair, a sponsor chair, a volunteer chair, and a communications chair. 

Responsibilities

  • Appoint a regional professional development team to assist with the program development for regional events. 
  • Work with SCUP staff program chair and conference chairs to develop themes for events.
  • Craft language for a call for proposals and descriptions of events for promotional materials in conjunction and collaboration with SCUP’s marketing staff in an effort to create a unified brand voice.
  • Serve as a proposal reviewer (if applicable) for the conference program chair and help in selecting sessions for conference.
  • Provide suggestions and/or help recruit invited speakers for plenary or concurrent sessions and pre-conference workshops.
  • Participate in regional council meetings, regional conferences and programs, and the annual international conference as much as possible.
  • Attend the annual regional council retreat at a location known or to be determined based on conference location; SCUP pays for transportation and lodging.

  • Member in good standing. 
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of SCUP organization and value of membership and engagement.

Time Commitment

    • Regional conference committee meetings – as determined by regional council at member’s expense 
    • Travel: Regional Conference 1x per year at member’s expense 
    • Travel: Regional Retreat 1x per year; SCUP pays for transportation and lodging.
    • Possible travel: Regional workshop/symposia, at member’s expense
