Kristine Kenney

Director of Campus Design & Planning
University of Washington, Seattle

As the Director Campus Architecture & Planning at the University of Washington (UW), Ms. Kenney works directly with academic, administrative, and design leaders, nurturing a team-based atmosphere to facilitate informed decision-making in support of stewarding the legacy of the UW’s built environment. Protecting this treasured asset for future generations relies on her adept skills to leverage professional relationships and synergies between different parts of the University to find commonalities and opportunities in a time of unlimited needs and constrained resources.

She oversees the team responsible for collecting and concisely communicating the physical needs of the University related to program space allocation, campus asset deficiencies, and ensuring an open and accessible campus environment. Through campus planning initiatives, design guidance, and strategic visioning, Kristine’s team translates the needs of each of the three campuses into projects that directly inform the Long-Term Capital Plan and Five-Year Capital Budget with an annual cash flow of $530M.

Kristine is a staunch advocate for design excellence with a particular emphasis on celebrating the experiential qualities and character of the campus with strong connections between interior and exterior environments. She often contributes to public awareness of University initiatives through presentations, interviews, lectures, and articles; and is an active member of professional organizations that support campus planning and landscape design excellence.
