Many institutions are coping with outmoded science buildings constructed in the post-Sputnik era. The mechanical systems in many of these structures are failing, the designs are fairly inflexible, and the costs of renovation or new construction are high. However, institutions have little choice; current needs simply cannot be addressed by existing structures. Given this reality, the pros and cons of minor renovations, extensive renovations, and new construction are evaluated.
