Successful integrated planning demands cross-functional collaboration. A recent report notes that the number of attorneys working for and at colleges and universities has grown over the last several decades, and these attorneys have become increasingly influential at their institutions. This article explores how planners can engage their institution’s counsel to advance institutional planning. It suggests that planners and attorneys might be natural colleagues and describes areas of potential collaboration, with notes on how higher education trends are making this alliance even more critical. Finally, it lists steps planners can take to facilitate this collaboration, including sustained (rather than episodic) engagement.
