A Message from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chair

Dear Mid-Atlantic Region Colleagues,

As a SCUP member since 2004 and an active volunteer since 2007, I believe the strength of SCUP stems from the amazing people compromising its membership. SCUP is where planning comes together and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate with you, the strong community we have formed in our Mid-Atlantic region.

SCUP is about community and connection. This was critically important during the development of SCUP’s 2019-2023 Strategic Plan (PDF). I was fortunate to represent our region and ultimately help the SCUP community identify four goals to achieve: Learning, Value, Engagement, and Alignment. I easily identified with the engagement of our community and delivering value goals as they related so closely with my personal volunteer goals.

Building community and finding that value comes with ensuring connection and learning opportunities. We’d love to see you connect at our upcoming Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference (March 15–17, Rutgers University, NJ), or at one-day symposiums, campus stroll and building tours, or simply connect with us via social on SCUP’s LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook.

Connection is more than just events. Sharing your expertise while also expanding your leadership skills are valuable regardless of how long you have been working in higher education. A great way to do this is serving as a volunteer. I have met so many wonderful people and made lifelong friends during my time as a SCUP volunteer. Interested in helping? Learn more about SCUP’s volunteer opportunities here or reach out to Trish Jaraicie (trish.jaraicie@scup.org) or email me directly at hbishop@umbc.edu. We’re sure you’ll find something that fits your expertise!

It’s been a wonderful 2019 for our region. We look forward to connecting more in 2020 and seeing you join the conversation.

Best,
