Job Duties

The Campus Planner is responsible for supporting campus planning functions for the University. Position will engage in a variety of projects related to higher education campus planning, programming, site studies, feasibility studies and urban design. The planner will work in a team-based environment with co-workers, clients, and user groups.

1. Planning- Performs professional work related to variety of planning assignments, including space and site planning, programming, feasibility analysis, development of alternatives, and analytics on for all nine university locations, as required. Makes recommendations to integrate into master plan, strategic plan and facilities planning issues, with a focus on the University Space Initiative and associated projects. (Daily)

2. Planning- Develops and contributes to complex planning studies and programming for short, mid, and long-term planning for space, site, facilities, transportation, capital projects, landscape, and infrastructure projects. Plans and develops short and long range programs and engages with leaders to promote and foster program success. Collects and applies data for planning related to long-term campus changes. Assists in the development, updates and compliance with campus and space planning principles and policies. (Weekly)

3. Capital Planning- Assist the AVP in the update and coordination of the campus capital plan. This work involves preparing robust Capital Improvement Plans, developing long-term financial planning reports, project budget forecasts, and monitoring performance against budget for projects.

4. Planning Research- Conducts research on project needs and prepares reports on physical land use, facilities and space use, transportation plans, studies and analyses. Responds to various requests for reports and documentation concerning the functional use of facilities and space to assist University in short and long range planning. Collects and applies data for planning related to long-term campus changes. (Weekly)

5. Planning- Prepares proposals for and works with outside planning firms for projects as necessary. (As needed)

6. People – Works with senior leaders, University departments and personnel, and external constituencies to strategize, plan, and implement major facilities-related programs and projects. Assists in directing the work of student interns who assist with space planning, updates to space and building information and drawings; collaborates with staff from other Units.

Decisions have major implications on the strategy, operational and business decisions that affect the department. Problems are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation. Problems are solved using knowledge and skills, and general precedents and practices. The Planner position works on university-wide collaborative efforts, presenting recommendations and options to affect major changes in the physical environment of the campus. This position works with multiple levels at the institution and external to the institution (e.g.: Board of Trustees, City partners, consultants, Deans).

For success in this position, individual must exhibit the following;
excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting planning reports and projects;
*excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships;
creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve less well-defined planning problems;
*group facilitation skills for use with community workshops;
**ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously and to manage projects effectively and meet firm deadlines.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Interior Architecture, or related field of study is required.

• Minimum of 3 years of related work experience in Higher Education Planning, space or classroom planning, database management, planning research, site and facilities planning, or urban planning.
