Columbia University in New York City has been a leader in teaching, learning, and research for 275 years. The boundaries of its historic campus core, which blur seamlessly into the surrounding city, present challenges for institutional growth and evolution within a limited space. Despite its constrained campus, Columbia has mastered the ability to expand its programs, seize opportunities for innovation, and build a more sustainable future. Join us for a full-day symposium on the Morningside and Manhattanville Campuses to discover how Columbia has evolved for success through integrated planning, design, and operations.
Learning Outcomes
- Detail Columbia’s approach to designing campus environments and master planning to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation.
- Identify the physical challenges and building opportunities on a historical campus, such as balancing preservation with modern needs and research goals.
- Outline Columbia’s strategies for integrating resilience and sustainability into campus planning through adaptive reuse and metrics to measure climate change impacts.
- Discuss how Columbia has expanded beyond its borders in ways that spur innovation while embracing the surrounding community.
