As part of its efforts to support holistic wellness for students, Marquette University opened the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility in early 2025. A $100 million re-imagination of an outdated recreation-only building, the 195,000 square foot project brought together campus fitness and recreation spaces with the counseling center and the university medical clinic, centralizing student services that were dispersed across campus. In addition, the new Lovell Center for Student Well-being was incorporated into the building to ensure that the spaces will foster community, inclusiveness, and engagement, and to provide a destination on campus that supports the physical and mental health needs of the Marquette community. Please join us to hear in-depth project insights, including remarks from both the campus vice president for planning and facilities management and first-ever campus chief wellness officer, and to tour the building. Representatives from the consultant and construction manager teams will also be on hand, contributing to what will be a great opportunity for learning, dialogue, and networking with colleagues.
Learning Outcomes:
- Explain the role that the physical campus and facilities play in a comprehensive integrated strategy to support student physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.
- Outline how to implement inclusive and neurodiverse design strategies that foster a welcoming community and support student mental health and well-being on campus
- Describe how intentional environmental interventions such as views, transitions, thresholds, wayfinding, placemaking, etc. create a sense of safety and belonging while reducing the stigma associated with the utilization of student support services.
- Identify approaches to solve complex issues in a building that combines programs and functions that are not typically co-located.
