Join leaders in integrated planning to see firsthand how Princeton University has cultivated its campus into a living ecosystem—sustaining legacy while driving innovation. You’ll leave with actionable strategies you can adapt to your own institution.

Over decades, Princeton has executed a holistic vision for campus planning that unites environmental stewardship, architectural and open space integrity, and the student experience. Through discussions focused on strategic climate action implementation, you’ll develop competencies in coordinating multiple long-term sustainability initiatives that align with academic and operational priorities.

Case studies will reveal how adaptive reuse has highlighted preservation planning as a powerful tool to enhance environmental performance and promote a culture of wellness, while discussions on mass timber construction will surface best practices for leveraging this low-carbon material to improve both sustainability outcomes and the quality of campus life.

Gain insider access to five of Princeton’s most exemplary campus spaces—including the brand-new Princeton University Art Museum—on guided tours designed to spark ideas you can take home.

Leave equipped with actionable strategies, peer-tested examples, and a renewed vision for how integrated planning can transform your institution’s future.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Comprehensive Campus Cultivation: Examine “Cultivating a Campus” as a holistic planning philosophy that approaches the university as a living ecosystem—enhancing environmental quality, promoting mental and physical well-being, and strengthening community health through integrated open space, accessibility, and integrated planning, design, and construction strategies.
  2. Strategic Climate Action Implementation: Develop competency in stakeholders who are responsible for long-term, strategic climate action initiatives that reduce environmental risk, enhance resilience, and prioritize resource conservation on campus.
  3. Adaptive Reuse Excellence: Evaluate and understand approaches to preserve, update, and improve an existing building, including opportunities for integration into campus fabric.
  4. Lessons Learned for Use of Mass Timber: Identify best practices in the use of mass timber as a structural system that supports occupant health through biophilic design, introduces new models for efficiency and fabrication, and contributes to carbon reduction goals that improve environmental and community well-being.
