A Chicagoland Perspective: Design Drivers for Expanding Student Engagement

Come visit Chicago’s western suburbs to learn about the higher education drivers that are improving inclusivity of student life spaces and expanding learning environments for Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers at College of Lake County and Waubonsee Community College. We’ll tour a new mission-built residence facility at Aurora University for autistic students and upperclassman and then continue the conversation in downtown Aurora where we’ll explore campus projects from College of Lake County and Waubonsee Community College. As an additional learning opportunity, we also invite you to attend an exhibit viewing of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning 2050.
If interested, please join us after the event in Downtown Aurora for some networking.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss how the new residential learning environment of Aurora Tower can improve engagement for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Identify design drivers for the new Aurora Tower residential building typology.
- Outline the safety, security, and planning issues involved in designing and building CTE facilities.
- Describe the design drivers, financial metrics, and trends for CTE center projects.

It creates a supportive, secure, and safe residential environment where students can fulfill their potential. Spaces in the building are sensory friendly and support the diverse needs students living on campus might encounter. It also houses the Pathways program for college-capable students with ASD and provides supportive spaces for the Neurodiversity program. Tucker Hall uses “University Design” in its programming and architectural design to foster an inclusive community that eases anxiety so students can focus their energy and emotions on a positive college experience.
