A critical hallmark of integrated planning is that decisions made during planning are informed by data, both qualitative and quantitative, about the institution and the world around it. These competencies relate to the ability to gather, analyze, synthesize, and use information to make decisions.

Feedback

The ability to get and use feedback from stakeholders

  • Organize and implement multiple methods for getting feedback (town halls, surveys, one-on-one conversations, interviews, exercises, etc.).
  • Select the feedback method to use based on your stakeholder analysis, circumstances, and the type of feedback needed.
  • Review, analyze, and organize feedback so that it’s useful for planning.

Research Outside the Institution

The ability to learn about broader trends and events that may impact the institution

  • Benchmark other institutions and research best practices.
  • Study and understand larger trends in higher education and in the world beyond.
  • Analyze competitors, and determine their impact on the institution.

Analyze

The ability to evaluate information and draw meaningful insights

  • Analyze multiple sources and types of information to determine validity, applicability, and relevance.
  • Look for patterns in trends, data, and information.
  • Evaluate different types of metrics for relevance.

Apply

The ability to use insights drawn from data and information

  • Use data and information to inform decisions.
  • Forecast the impact that trends and forces may have on the institution in the future.
  • Anticipate how decisions made in the plan could impact the institution, units, and stakeholders, in the near- and far-term.
  • Advocate for the user and what they need.
