Conference ThemeLeadership for the 21st Century Campus The 21st century has been called the Pacific Century. North American colleges and universities at the edge of the Pacific are well-positioned both geographically and intellectually to guide, influence, and lead this shift in global focus. The SCUP regional conference in Palo Alto will address institutional leadership: the ways in which our member campuses, consultants, and professional associates are preparing to lead planning for campuses for the next 50 years. With the flattening of organizations, leadership will be critical at all levels of our institutions. How do we provide leadership without titles and hierarchy? How can we, representing colleges, universities, professional organizations, and consultants provide leadership on the planet's most intractable issues? How does personal leadership mesh with institutional goals? What initiatives are we leading—or planning to lead—that will push us all to achieve society's higher aspirations? At the SCUP 2011 Pacific Regional Conference, Father Stephen Sundborg, president of Seattle University, described two types of leaders: conductors of orchestras and captains of ships. In considering these two models—and others—this year, in Palo Alto, we, 21st century campus planners, will share, question, and explore opportunities and challenges for colleges and universities in the Pacific Century.
