Pacific Region 2013 Professional Development Assistance Scholarship Program:
Deadline for Applications is JANUARY 21, 2013

SCUP is pleased to be able to continue its scholarship program for the 2013 regional conference. Participation of institutional members at the SCUP regional conferences and events is a high priority for the SCUP pacific region. The SCUP Pacific Regional Council recognizes the financial hardships experienced by institutions of higher education in the current fiscal environment. In order to provide support to members interested in continuing their professional training and development and to promote participation in regional activities, the SCUP pacific council has set aside scholarship funds to defray the cost of attending the SCUP 2013 Pacific Regional Conference. Application forms and more details are available on the conference website.

Tours

The Denver local host committee has put together an exciting list of campus TOURS that will contribute to understanding the conference theme of “Place Making”. Campuses create powerful memories. The places and spaces of the institutions on the tour list foster social networks and initiatives that encourage interaction and social sustainability, as well as inspirational education. Denver campuses and the regional campuses offer a wide variety of tour opportunities. In fact, the 6 tours that SCUP will provide are only part of what you can see on your own in the Metro Denver area and beyond. SCUP is putting the finishing touches on the tours and will have them available for registration soon. An alert will be sent to let you know when they are available for registration.

Sunday Afternoon

Colorado School of MinesThe Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, Colorado was founded in 1873 to serve the mining industry. It has now expanded to its current focus of understanding Earth, harnessing energy, and sustaining the environment. The tour will highlight the historic sense of ‘place’ of this campus as well as three recently completed projects which demonstrate the evolving mission of the institution.

Lower Downtown DenverYou also can sign up for a two-hour walking tour of Lower Downtown Denver’s Historic “LoDo” District. You will get to see the city’s original 1858 commercial and warehouse district, go through the Larimer Square block that saved the historic fabric of LoDo, through the hugely successful loft district, and then to the historic Union Station-now expanding to be the multi-modal transportation hub of Denver and the center of a multi-billion dollar buildout of mixed use development. The tour will end at the Wynkoop Brewery.

Monday

Colorado State UniversityTwo full-day tours of Colorado State University are on the agenda. Track 1 will focus on ‘A Day in the Life of a CSU Student’. New styles of housing, athletic and recreational facilities, academic residence halls, and the University Center for the Arts will be seen on this track. Track 2 has a theme of ‘Research in the Rockies’. You will see CSU’s engine research lab, the campus solar plant, the biomass boiler, and the new Engineering II bio-engineering research building. After lunch this track will continue with the Diagnostic Medicine Lab and the Animal Cancer Center. Both tracks will cross paths for lunch at the RamsHorn Dining Center where you will see presentations on the campus capital construction process and the future of the University.

University of DenverA morning tour will go to the prestigious campus of the University of Denver. This private university has worked diligently to become one of the top 100 higher learning institutions in the United States. The presentation and tour will focus on how combining budget planning, maintenance planning, and fundraising leadership, along with a concerted architectural effort, allowed for DU to gain this prominence.

Johnson & Wales UniversityAn afternoon tour will visit the campus of Johnson & Wales University, the Western campus of the growing institution for hospitality and food service, offering a variety of 4 year degrees. This campus was previously the Colorado Women’s College, established in the late 1800’s as the first women’s college west of the Mississippi. JWU acquired the campus in 1999 and has created a new sense of place for their specialty programs and students, while holding onto the traditions and architecture of the historic campus. The tour will focus on how to acquire an existing institution and create a cohesive campus of a university with multiple locations.

Wednesday Afternoon

Anschutz Medical CampusThis tour will travel to the Anschutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado for an overview of this large and rapidly growing ‘new’ campus. In 1998 the then University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the University of Colorado Hospital Authority underwent an unprecedented planning exercise to move to the former site of the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in the eastern Denver suburb of Aurora. In doing so, they were committing to building a Health Science City from nearly the ground up. Today the campus has 8.2 million square feet of space, employs 16,000 people and is the home of a huge economic engine for the State of Colorado providing education, research, service and patient care. The tour will stop at some of the more notable buildings but also examine some of the many challenges that the campus faced and still faces as it plans for an ever-growing future.

How To Get Involved

Looking for ways to get more involved with SCUP?  A way to meet new folks? Work alongside institutional partners? A committee is the best way to accomplish all this and more.

The Communications Committee is specifically looking for volunteers in every state and country of our region. We want to be able to better connect our members by featuring articles and updates from members in all parts of our region and are looking for volunteers interested in bringing news from their state or country into the newsletter and other forums.

If you’re interested, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Myrna Wagner, mwagner@swinerton.com who will help you find the best match for your interests and talents.
