CONFERENCE NEWS & FEATURES
SCUP 2012 - Pacific Regional Symposium – Friday, May 4, 2012
“Developing Integrated Campus Master Plans to Match Changing Higher Education Imperatives”
The United States Air Force Academy
Colorado Springs, CO
Onsite registration will be available.
To keep pace with the rapid need for change it has become increasingly critical to seek ways to align new institutional imperatives with campus master planning efforts. Despite relatively new master plans at many universities, leaders have found changing circumstances have quickly outdated previous strategic thinking, leaving even new plans obsolete. State institutions previously dependent on consistently flowing state resources now find themselves searching for alternative solutions in order to preserve their mission. Private institutions are also questioning mission, resource, and need.
Join our distinguished panel of speakers for the day to learn how to:
- Help to determine the most important objectives to accomplish over the life of the master plan.
- Question traditional thinking and suggest alternative combinations and solutions.
- Encourage integrated planning by comprehensively reviewing all institutional components.
- Develop a campus master plan that university leaders can utilize as a resource rather than a static document.
Visit the SCUP website for the agenda and tour times.

This year’s tours include The United States Air Force Academy campus after the panel discussions on Friday and The University of Colorado and Colorado College on Saturday.
Behind the Scenes
Each year, the Pacific Regional Conference offers workshops, tours, and sessions to give SCUP members opportunities to learn, share knowledge and experiences, and connect with colleagues all over the region. Planning for the annual conferences and one-day symposium events starts months, even years in advance and is only made possible each year by a dedicated group of volunteers that make up the local host and conference planning committees.
Continuing our series highlighting individuals that make these events possible, the 360 Newsletter sat down with Phil Simpson, SCUP Pacific Region Program Chair, to talk about the upcoming one-day event in Colorado Springs.
1. The theme for the one-day event is integrated campus master planning to match changing campus imperatives. How did the committee get to this theme?
[PS:] There was a survey done by SCUP of the regional membership as to the topics that are most pertinent. After reviewing the responses, this was the key thought that ran through many of the ideas.
2.What would someone who works at a small public community college campus be able to take away from the day?
[PS:] There will be a series of discussions throughout the day focusing on various aspects of campus master planning. Everyone should be able to take away that master planning is a process and journey, not an end result.
3.What sort of interaction will we have with the Air Force Academy cadets? Will there be opportunities?
[PS:] Absolutely. There will be an opportunity to see the entire brigade be served at one time. Some cadets will join us for activities so there will be time to talk to them about their experiences on campus. In addition, planning is in the works to see the flyover that occurs on campus.
4. Can you give us a sneak peak at the 2013 Pacific Regional Conference in Denver?
[PS:] Theme will be "Placemaking." Not just the physical place but the essence of place. Even in these tough economic times there can be placemaking on campus. We will explore if places can be virtual. What are the keys to making a great place? How does a place raise a person's spirit?
5. Any preliminary ideas on campus tours?
[PS:] The conference is being held at Auraria Education Center which is three institutions that exist on one campus so there will opportunities to see how they have merged these three campuses and share space while also creating identities for each institution. University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus may be on the tour list - a medical campus that moved from downtown to 192 acres outside of town. We are also looking to see if it is possible to tour the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which was a very popular tour at the 2009 Pacific Regional Conference in Boulder.
A special thanks to all of our contributors who have reached out to our conference committees and provided this series of Behind the Scenes interviews: Larry Fournier, Rutherford and Chekene; Myrna Wagner, Swinerton; and Leigh Anne Jones, NTD Architecture.
Recapping the SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference:
“Leadership for the 21st Century Campus”
March 25–28 2012, Palo Alto, CA

The 2012 Pacific Regional Conference “Leadership for the 21st Century Campus” explored the opportunities and challenges for colleges and universities in the 21st century. This year’s record attendance of 418 attendees were treated to a thought-provoking opening plenary talk Monday evening by Martha J. Kanter, under secretary of education, followed by Tuesday evening’s plenary where speakers worldwide shared their thoughts on leadership.
For the first time at our regional conferences, the Pacific Regional Conference connected via live feed to the Higher Education Planning in Asia Forum (HEPA).

Twice during this year’s SCUP conference we were able to connect in real time with the Higher Education Planning in Asia Forum (HEPA). During this worldwide “Pecha Kucha” speakers shared their perspective on leadership across continents including the Peking University School of Transnational Law and NYU Shanghai; the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise in Singapore; the Singapore University of Technology + Design’s partnership with MIT; the Okinawa Institute of Science + Technology and the Hong Kong University of Science + Technology partnership with NWU’s Kellogg School of Management.
Michael Fung, director of planning & institutional research, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, played an instrumental part in organizing this year's cross-continent video conference. He had the following to say regarding this years event:
“I have been a SCUP member for several years now, and had been looking for ways to nurture an active network of Asian institutions focused on higher education planning. The first-ever Higher Education Planning in Asia (HEPA) Forum was organized with that very goal in mind. It was a significant event, as it brought together a diverse group of senior institutional planners from across Asia (Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Korea, New Zealand, Australia), including participants from the UK and US. This is clear evidence that Asian planners are eager to connect, learn, and share experiences with one another. Through the insightful presentations made by our speakers, engagement of participants in the interactive workshop, and the networking during the lunches and dinners, participants felt that they had benefited a great deal from attending the Forum. The live video-link with the SCUP Pacific Region conference was definitely a highlight at the event, and it certainly felt like the Hong Kong and Palo Alto speakers and audiences were interacting from the same location! The Forum participants were highly appreciative of being able to be part of the larger SCUP conference, and this further emphasized the highly international nature of the event. My sincere thanks to the SCUP conference organizing team (in particular John White, Chris Shay, and John Long) for their enthusiasm and faith, and for the IT teams for their amazing technical work to turn the ideas into reality!
Looking ahead, I hope to build on the momentum to strengthen the network of Asian institutional planners, and to chart out a series of relevant activities and communications. I am looking forward to further collaborations with SCUP, towards our shared goal of building up planning capabilities amongst higher education institutions.”
Conference proceedings are now posted on the SCUP Pacific Regional website
