SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference:
Leadership for the 21st Century Campus
March 25–28, 2012
Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA
Save the date!
The SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference will be held at Stanford University, located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of the Bay Area’s Silicon Valley. The local host committee has been working hard to create an amazing conference, and we are excited to share a few highlights of the program that is taking shape.
The SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference theme is “Leadership for the 21st Century Campus." The 21st century has been called the Pacific Century because North American colleges and universities at the edge of the Pacific are well positioned both geographically and intellectually to guide, influence, and lead this shift in global focus. The SCUP regional conference in Palo Alto will address institutional leadership: The ways in which our member campuses, consultants, and professional associates are preparing to lead planning for campuses for the next 50 years. Read more.

You will be able to tour many of the Bay Area campuses where scholars, entrepreneurs, and business people are embracing demands of the 21st century. Potential tours include:
- University of California, Berkeley
- Pixar Animation Studios
- Chiron Corporation
- University of California, San Francisco, Mission Bay Campus
- Stanford University
- College of San Mateo
- Foothill College
- SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
The local host committee is also planning a number of 1–2 hour 5th wheel concurrent tours, throughout the Stanford campus, which will give you the opportunity to learn about the innovative problem solving, landscape and historic stewardship, athletics programs, resource management, arts initiatives, and science research taking place at one of the world’s leading institutions.
Our call for proposals ended October 1. The program selection volunteers are reviewing several workshop proposals and more than 70 concurrent session proposals.
As next March gets closer, we look forward to sharing more information about our world-class speakers, collaborative workshops, thought-provoking concurrent sessions, tours, and social events (including exercise!) that will make the SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference an inspiration and education for all attending SCUPers!
Announcing the Pacific Region 2012 Scholarship Program
SCUP is pleased to be able to continue its Scholarship Program for the SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference. Participation of institutional members at the SCUP regional conferences and events is a high priority for the SCUP pacific region. The SCUP Pacific Regional Council recognizes the financial hardships experienced by institutions of higher education in the current fiscal environment. In order to provide support to members interested in continuing their professional training and development and to promote participation in regional activities, the SCUP pacific council has set aside scholarship funds to defray the cost of attending the SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference. Application forms and more details are available on the conference website.
SCUP–46 Integrated Solutions:
How & Now
Check out the SCUP–46 webpage for conference proceedings and feedback.
With 1,495 attendees, SCUP–46 in National Harbor, MD, was the second highest attended annual, international conference in SCUP's history (the highest was 1,557 at SCUP–42 in Chicago; third highest was 1,461 at SCUP–36 in Boston).
- 15% of the attendees were from the Pacific region.
- 64% of the attendees were members.
- 40% of the total were institutional (normally annual conference attendance is 50:50 institutional-corporate. The drop in institutional attendance is attributed to travel and budget restrictions).
- The evaluations of the program are very positive and can be downloaded from the SCUP–46 homepage.
- All members (plus nonmember attendees to SCUP–46) can access the SCUP–46 Executive Summaries (login required: available to all members and to the nonmember attendees of the conference).
- Watch the three plenary session videos. (log-in required: available to all members and to the nonmember attendees of the conference).
SCUP Regional Survey Feedback
At SCUP–46, we asked members attending the Pacific Region Business Meeting to take a short survey to learn more about their experiences with face-to-face events in the Pacific Region. We received a tremendous response and noted a number of members interested in volunteering, as well.
Thank you to those of you that took the time to complete the survey; you have provided fantastic feedback that will help us plan future programs and events according to your needs and interests. Here are a few highlights:
- The majority of respondents have not attended recent One-Day Symposiums, mostly due to time and economics. Many people would prefer that the symposiums be held in close proximity to their place of work or to airports/transportation. Most popular event locations include Southern California, San Francisco/Bay Area, and the major cities in the Northwest, with other requests for Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. One respondent commented that she has attended and would continue to attend symposiums as long as the location is “anywhere Southwest Airlines goes for under $250 round trip."
- We want to ensure that future Program Topics for our regional conferences and one-day symposiums reflect our members’ interests. Popular program topics include sustainability; campus integrated planning; technology, including social media as a tool for planning; public/private partnerships; new innovations/design; and current issues/trends affecting higher education.
- In addition to the popular topics listed above, several respondents are interested in seeing particular topics on the program for the SCUP 2012 Pacific Regional Conference. Topics include “future think - visioning 20 years – what will it be like”; “the pros and cons of hiring a famous design architect”; “collaboration on better corporate/institutional leadership”; "net zero buildings”; and “economic development planning strategies."
- Survey feedback indicates that campus tours are very popular at regional conferences. A tour of the Apple campus is of interest to one potential SCUP 2012 Regional Conference attendee due to Stanford University’s close proximity to Silicon Valley. One respondent also suggested “in-depth, one-day campus experiences” for one-day symposiums.
- The electronic SCUP 360 Newsletter and Regional LinkedIn Group are our primary communication methods within a broad geographic region. However, we learned from the survey that a number of respondents either were not aware of or do not belong to the LinkedIn group and were not aware of the newsletter. This information will help us determine how to better increase awareness of these resources to our members.
Finally, thank you to the person who wrote that “the Pacific Region is doing a great job."

Volunteering
How To Get Involved
Looking for ways to get more involved with SCUP? A way to meet new folks? Work alongside institutional partners? A committee is the best way to accomplish all this and more.
The communications committee is specifically looking for volunteers in every state and country of our region. We want to be able to better connect our members by featuring articles and updates from members in all parts of our region and are looking for volunteers interested in bringing news from their state or country into the newsletter and other forums.
If you’re interested, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Myrna Wagner, mwagner@swinerton.com who will help you find the best match for your interests and talents.
