2011 SCUP Pacific Regional Conference – “Inspiring Community”

Registration deadline is March 7!

Register today at: www.scup.org/page/regions/pa/2011/registrationanddeadlines

WELCOME!

March is quickly approaching and before you know it, we’ll be seeing you at the Pacific Regional Conference “Inspiring Community” in Seattle! The local host committee has been working on this conference for over a year now, and is excited to share this great program with you that is full of surprises!

Working for mission-based institutions, all that we do is somehow connected to the community (and communities) that we serve. We are, therefore, very happy to show you some of our more inspiring communities, and perhaps even have you create new ones through networking.

Some of the established communities you will be able to visit include:

  • Seattle University (Capitol Hill/ First Hill neighborhoods of Seattle)
  • University of Washington (U-District, Seattle)
  • Seattle Community Colleges (Capitol Hill/North Seattle/ West Seattle/South Seattle)
  • University of Washington – (Downtown Tacoma)
  • University of Puget Sound – (Tacoma)
  • University of Washington School of Medicine – (South Lake Union neighborhood, Seattle)
  • Bellevue College – (Bellevue/Kirkland/Issaquah – the Eastside)

We are looking forward to sharing with you world-class speakers, thought-provoking concurrent sessions (from communities throughout the Pacific region and the world at large), tours that take us out onto campuses and into the communities, collaborative workshops, and many opportunities throughout for serendipitous encounters with each other to ponder, discuss, reinvent, and “inspire” community!

See you soon!

-Jill Morelli and Lisa Johnson, co-chairs of the 2011 Pacific Regional Conference, on behalf of the 2011 Seattle local host committee

So what can you expect? Read on…

NOTHING SAYS “COMMUNITY” QUITE LIKE BOWLING, EH?

“After tea it's back to painting - a large poplar at dusk with a gathering storm. From time to time instead of this evening painting session I go bowling in one of the neighboring villages…”  -Gustav Klimt

Please join our local host committee and the SCUP Pacific membership committee Sunday night, March 20th, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM for bowling and billiards at “The Garage”! (Early Bird (No host) Reception)

Don’t worry, this ain’t your daddy’s bowling alley… it’s an adaptive reuse of a 1920s clearspan building (formerly a Plymouth dealership and automotive garage) that is now a Capitol Hill neighborhood (and citywide) destination for pool, food, drink, (and bowling!) that is just a few steps out the front door and down the sidewalk from the Silver Cloud Hotel (the conference hotel).

The cost of lanes and billiards rental is complimentary. Attendees are responsible for shoe rental ($3.50 USD per person), food, and beverages.

The Garage is age 21 and older only. ID will be required at the door.

Please refer to www.garagebilliards.com for more information, including the story, (and design and planning history) of the Garage, and some words on the artwork (by community artists), featured throughout the space. We hope to see you there!

MUSIC = INSPIRATION

"If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music."- Albert Einstein

MONDAY NIGHT OPENING RECEPTION, March 21st (following the opening plenary):  The Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble

Ernestine Anderson. Quincy Jones. Jimi Hendrix. Seattle is full of music. Who knows what greats are yet to share their musical talents with us in years to come?

The Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble is comprised of students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Located in Seattle, Washington (within blocks of Seattle University), Garfield is a public (tuition-free) high school with such an interest in jazz that it maintains three levels of jazz band in its curriculum.

Garfield continues to bring to young people the jazz traditions of such big bands as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Woody Herman. The group has won every major competition on the west coast of the United States. In 2006, it was named the Outstanding Festival Band at the prestigious Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, an unprecedented seventh time. In 2010, Garfield took first place in the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 15th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Band Competition and Festival. Garfield has been eligible and won more than any other school in the history of the competition.

Northwest public schools have deep jazz roots and they've routinely been a presence at the Ellington festival. This year, two other local schools, Edmonds-Woodway High School and Roosevelt High School - who's won Ellington three times - joined Garfield in the top honors.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF SEATTLE!

“Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.”-
Chinese proverb

How well do you know Seattle and the Pacific Northwest? We’ve prepared a quiz so you can test your knowledge!

Try your hand at responding to these 10 questions – prizes will be awarded at the opening reception on Sunday evening! Send your answers to Sam Miller at smiller@lmnarchitects.com.

  1. How many different nations are represented in Seattle University’s student population of 4,300?
  2. Based on historical evidence, when Mt. Rainier next erupts there will be large mud flows that can be up to 40 miles long and travel at speeds of 60 mph. What are these phenomena called?
  3. How many SCUP past presidents live in Seattle? Bonus points if you can name them.
  4. What is the name of the Seattle high school that came in first place in the 2010 Jazz at Lincoln Center national competition (and is a perennial winner)?
  5. What Tacoma museum opened in 2002 that showcases an art form that is especially strong in the Northwest?
  6. What personal fashion accessory do Seattle residents buy the most compared to the rest of the country and why?
  7. What is the percentage of Seattle citizens holding a library card? Where does that place Seattle nationally?
  8. Where is the famous martial arts actor Bruce Lee buried?
  9. What is the name of the longest continuously operated farmers market in the United States?
  10. What is the Seattle region’s percentage of citizens with college degrees? Where does that rank Seattle nationally?

CAN PLACEMAKING EXIST WITHOUT FOOD?

“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.”  ~Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright, Pavarotti, My Own Story

The local host committee would like to invite you to join us for a number of group dine-arounds on Tuesday night, March 22nd (meeting @ 6:00 PM in the lobby of the Silver Cloud; reservations @ 6:30 PM).

Sign-ups for the groups will be available at the conference, and we have paired an institutional member and a corporate member from our local host committee for each venue. Each attendee will be responsible for the cost of his/her food and drink.

The following is information on the venues:

Oddfellows Café and Bar
“Oddfellows Cafe & Bar is like the Willie Nelson of restaurants -- its funky coolness is only enhanced up by virtue of its well-weathered character. Yet, just like the Texas troubadour, Oddfellows is no relic. The space on Capitol Hill that once housed the fraternal club of old has been magnificently transformed … The brilliant vibe comes from a deliberate kind of benevolent neglect. The historic space retains its old-codger charm, from the well-worn wooden floors to the giant flag hanging by the entry, a real Old Glory bearing just 48 stars. The menu is populated by warming comfort foods: stews, mac-and-cheese, the best darned fries ever served in a tin can.” - Seattle Post-Intelligencer review

La Spiga
“In Italy, the osteria is an inviting neighborhood spot where locals savor fresh, seasonal food while enjoying the company of good friends.
Renowned for its Northern Italian cuisine, La Spiga is authentic enough in both food and ambience to make you feel a wave of nostalgia, even if you’ve never been to Emilia-Romagna. Chef and co-owner Sabrina Tinsley crafts the Romagnola cuisine to make it genuine, yet hers alone. Using the very finest ingredients, menus are changed seasonally to reflect what is freshest in local markets. As co-owner and host Pietro Borghesi says, 'An evening at La Spiga is like dining in Italy — without the plane fare.' " – excerpt from La Spiga website

Tin Table
“The Tin Table is sort of hidden, but not in a trying-to-be-hush-hush, speak-easy kinda way. It's upstairs, and after entering the 10th Avenue entrance, it still takes two turns to get to. Not a bar and restaurant you just stumble upon.

It's also one of the coolest-looking joints on Capitol Hill. There's a hardwood floor, exposed high beams and exposed brick wall. It looks rustic and masculine.

For bar grub, there are shoestring fries with truffle salt — golden, crispy and addictive. Also here, one of the better bar burgers on Capitol Hill, loaded with sharp cheddar, slabs of bacon and caramelized onions. It's juicy, cheesy and salty. That burger, though, goes better with a beer.” – excerpts from Seattle Times Review

Via Tribunali
“Our first pizzeria has become a central meeting place in the bustling Capitol Hill neighborhood. If you are visiting Seattle we highly recommend you make an evening out of your visit to the Hill - nightclubs, coffee roasters, bars and restaurants abound. At this location expect soaring ceilings, glowing stained glass fixtures, a long buzzing bar, and cozy booths.”- excerpt from Via Tribunali website

Volunteering
How To Get Involved

Looking for ways to get more involved with SCUP? A way to meet new folks? Work alongside institutional partners? A committee is the best way to accomplish all this and more.

The Pacific Region’s Communications Committee is specifically looking for volunteers in every state and country of our region. We want to be able to better connect our members by featuring articles and updates from members in all parts of our region and are looking for volunteers interested in bringing news from their state or country into the newsletter and other forums.

If you’re interested, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Myrna Wagner, mwagner@swinerton.com who will help you find the best match for your interests and talents.

Pacific Region 2011 Scholarship Awards

In recognition of the financial hardships experienced by institutions of higher education in the current fiscal environment, and in order to provide support to institutional members interested in continuing their professional development and training, the Pacific Council has set aside scholarship funds to defray the cost of attending the Pacific Regional Conference in March 2011.

This year we are pleased to announce the award of 5 scholarships in the amount of $500 each. Recipients of the scholarship represent the following institutions:
 - Yakima Valley Community College
 - University of New Mexico
 - CSU Channel Islands
 - University of Colorado, Boulder
 - Bellevue College.

Connect and Converse Across the Region

As we prepare for next month’s 2011 Pacific Regional Conference, consider that the Pacific Region encompasses 13 states, 3 Canadian provinces, the Pacific Rim, and Western Mexico!  Conference attendees will be traveling from near and far to interact for several days with fellow members. So, how to stay connected with each other during the rest of the year without having to travel?

The answer: SCUP’s Pacific Region LinkedIn Group

SCUP’s Pacific Region LinkedIn Group allows members to create dialogue - network, ask questions, post job listings and events, and more – all within the context of the larger overall SCUP group, which has nearly 1,600 members. Currently, the Pacific Region subgroup has less than 50 members, while the Pacific Region membership exceeds 900.

Terry Calhoun, SCUP director of media relations & publications, aims to increase our group membership: “SCUP is using LinkedIn as a means of conversation so that institutions may exchange ideas and thoughts. In the next few weeks, we will send email invites to all SCUP Pacific Region members so that you can join your region’s LinkedIn community.”

Several SCUP regions are already active in the use of LinkedIn groups. When Calhoun and representatives from SCUP’s Mid-Atlantic and North Central Regions sent invitations, each region increased its LinkedIn group membership substantially. Mid-Atlantic now has 231 members and North Central has 216 members. Once membership increased, so did the sense of community and the growth in dialogue.

Watch for your invitation from Terry Calhoun in the next few weeks. If you want to join immediately, please join the main LinkedIn group. Once your membership is approved, you may join the Pacific Region subgroup. Look for it in the main SCUP group’s navigation tabs, under “More” and then “Subgroups.”

And when you do, please introduce yourself to the group via a post.

Upcoming Online Survey

Soon, we will be asking each of you to complete a short, online survey in order to receive your input and suggestions about how the Pacific Region may best utilize the different social media outlets (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.). While LinkedIn is SCUP’s most utilized social media outlet, we want to hear your ideas and thoughts on this timely topic.

Our Members

Membership (join, renew, update): membership@scup.org

Did you know….?
…at the beginning of January 2011, SCUP had 4,810 members, representing a 2% growth over the same time last year?
…and, the Pacific Region has paralleled that growth, growing from 1,124 to 1,141 members?

The 360 Newsletter

We’d still like to hear from you: help us make the newsletter effective for you as members. Please share your thoughts and suggestions by contacting Cheryl Lentini at clentini@bparch.com.

And be sure to join our Pacific Region LinkedIn Group for all of the latest information and discussions in our region: www.scup.org/socmed/PAregionLinkedIn.
