2011 SCUP Pacific Regional Conference – “Inspiring Community”
Join us in Seattle March 21−23. Be part of our face-to-face gathering of integrated planners, dedicated to advancing this valuable discussion. You can join the community on Facebook prior to this event, too.

Our Journey? From the Local Community, to the Global Community, and Back Again!
Please see some highlights of this journey below. We will continue to provide you with additional information and details on our plenary speakers at our conference website - as the date of the conference approaches. Stay tuned!
Following is an introduction to one of our lunch plenaries, a Pecha Kucha on “Third Place”:

Pecha Kucha 20x20: The Third Place
Rapid Fire Third Place! Can’t wait! Pecha Kucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration inspiring creativity worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is simple in concept: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Our second plenary will be a PK format showing some of the creativity of the region as it relates to Third Place. Speakers will represent a variety of disciplines that affect the making of Third Place.
“Pecha Kucha”? How do you even say that word? Check out this handy video:

Announcing the Pacific Region 2011 Scholarship Plan
In recognition of the financial hardships experienced by institutions of higher education in the current fiscal environment, and in order to provide support to institutional members interested in continuing their professional development and training, the Pacific Council has set aside scholarship funds to defray the cost of attending the Pacific Regional Conference in March 2011. Scholarship information.
Spotlight on the Pacific Member Relations Team (MRT)
Led by Deborah Shepley, Pacific’s Regional Membership Chair and principal and community college practice leader for HMC Architects, the newly forming Member Relations Team (MRT) for SCUP boasts an impressive national and international flair. Members from California, Colorado, and Hong Kong have begun the job of collaborating on innovative strategies to deliver a successful Pacific Regional conference in Seattle. According to the SCUP Membership Handbook, “members of the MRT will foster a welcoming and inclusive environment at the regional level by focusing on new members (but also serving as a resource for existing members) through personal contacts.” The collective knowledge of this powerful team will ensure their mission becomes reality.
MRTs are ambassadors for SCUP and they support members at regional and national events and beyond. You may not realize their influence in front and behind the scenes, but their vast stewardship includes:
- Greeting new members at regional and national events, such as the annual Newcomers Reception or “New Member Orientation” at the annual international conference or orientation/welcome sessions or receptions at regional conferences.
- Assisting in development and maintenance of new member orientation programs at the national or regional level.
- Attending their regional conference and, if feasible, the annual international conference.
- Serving as the primary contact for new member wayfinding.
- Assisting the RMC with other duties such as providing content for the regional newsletter, assisting with recruitment campaigns, or in developing special events aimed at enhancing membership services.
Members attending the pacific regional conference can be assured their conference experience will be a resounding success under the watchful eyes of the Member Relations Team.
