Uncovering Patterns in the Sustainability Maze: An In-Depth Discussion

Moderated by Stacey White from Mode Associates, presentations from ZGF, Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and University of Colorado Boulder filled the morning session. Topics ranged from exploration of an integrated approach to design, to strategic approaches for handling both new construction and operations and maintenance, to development and implementation of sustainable capital construction processes supporting the institution’s energy conservation and environmental stewardship goals. The morning’s presenters were joined in the afternoon by Tom Kennedy from the CSU Office of the Chancellor for a Q&A session to further explore, compare, and contrast each institution’s approach to defining and then achieving sustainability for each of their campuses or systems. The day closed with a tour of the University of New Mexico campus and a reception at the Tamarind Institute.
For more information on the presentations from the symposium, visit the conference website.2011 Pacific Regional Conference⎯“Inspiring Community”
How many different “communities” and definitions of “community” exist and affect integrated planning at YOUR institution?
Those of us on the planning committee for the 2011 conference have been pursuing this very question. Following is OUR brainstorm. Does any of this resonate with YOU?
We’d love for YOU to join US here in Seattle March 21−23, as a “community of integrated planners” dedicated to advancing this valuable discussion.

Through our conference plenary sessions, we will be bringing you speakers who are exemplary in their inspiration of local community, global community, and in the creation (and inspiration) of “Third Places” that foster and support community interaction.
Please see some highlights of this journey below. We will continue to provide you with additional information and details on our plenary speakers at our conference website (www.scup.org/page/regions/pa/2011) as the date of the conference approaches. Stay tuned!
OPENING PLENARY: Stephen V. Sundborg, President of Seattle University (our local host institution)
Sundborg became president of Seattle University in July 1997. He leads a comprehensive, independent university of more than 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 1,000 faculty and staff members.
Since becoming president, Sundborg's key objectives have been to encourage student-centered education, enhance academic excellence, and develop resources to support a growing student population. During his tenure, Seattle University has built a new law school, a student center, and student residences. Sundborg is strongly committed to promoting social justice, a core value of the Jesuit Catholic education. He actively supports programs that encourage students, faculty, and staff to make a difference, whether in the local community or developing countries.
Biography excerpt courtesy of Seattle University, www.seattleu.edu/president/
“The third place is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg (1989, 1991) argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Oldenburg calls one's ‘first place’ the home and those that one lives with. The ‘second place’ is the workplace—where people may actually spend most of their time. Third places, then, are ‘anchors’ of community life, and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction." - Wikipedia
Not only will we have a plenary dialogue on Third Place, the concept of Third Place will be woven throughout the conference, in ways that you can see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. Interested? Intrigued? We hope so, and we look forward to unveiling more about Third Place as the conference date approaches.
