Venues and Activities
The planning moves forward for our 2010 conference in La Jolla. Your Council met recently and visited the various venues, helping the committee to make critical decisions on where we will be and what we will see. The Opening Day Tours will include:
- San Diego State University and the University of San Diego – two unique campuses in the area; and
- UC San Diego and the Salk Institute. Each will include a tour guide, lunch and camaraderie.
On the last day of the conference, we will be providing two area tours not to be missed by out-of-towners:
- La Jolla Historical Walking Tour given by the Chief Historian of the La Jolla Historical Society; and
- Balboa Park and Gaslamp District Tour, provided by the San Diego Architectural Foundation.
Watch for more information on these wonderful events!

Conference Program
The 2010 Pacific Regional Conference program is shaping up to provide members with a wide array of educational opportunities. There are two dozen exciting concurrent sessions planned, along with workshops and plenary sessions. All corners of our Pacific Region will be represented with a few sessions from institutions outside the region with compelling stories and lessons to share. Community colleges and universities alike are dealing with the challenges identified in the conference theme and as we plan for upcoming academic years, the conference will supplement a strong foundation for healthy dialogues and strategies that follow. View the schedule at a glance and more.
Announcing the Pacific Region Scholarship Plan
In recognition of the financial hardships experienced by institutions of higher education in the current fiscal environment, and in order to provide support to institutional members interested in continuing their professional development and training, the Pacific Council has set aside scholarship funds to defray the cost of attending the Pacific Regional Conference in April 2010. Look for application information to be posted soon to the SCUP website.
A Note from Your Pacific Regional Representative
I am pleased to let you know that the Pacific Council has just completed its annual planning retreat and we can confirm progress in the following four areas:
- Professional Development – a commitment to organizing one Regional Conference and one single day Educational Symposium each year
- Membership – added emphasis on cost control (i.e. keeping conference registration fees and hotel accommodations affordable and introduction of a scholarship pilot program for institutional members)
- Volunteerism – added emphasis on increased volunteer participation
- Communications – more frequent and consistent electronic newsletters and exploration of new professional networking applications.
I look forward to seeing many of you in La Jolla this April.

A Word About Sponsorship and Our Sponsorship Chair
SCUP Pacific Region has launched our 2010 Annual Sponsorship Campaign. The financial support of our corporate members is essential to the quality and vibrancy of our programs. This year we have also initiated an institutional scholarship program to underwrite the cost of qualified institutional members as a way of boosting their attendance at the upcoming Regional Conference in La Jolla. If you are interested in becoming an annual Regional Sponsor, please contact our Chair Larry Fournier of Rutherford & Chekene at lfournier@ruthchek.com or 415.568.4413.
Larry Fournier is a principal and the CMO at Rutherford & Chekene, structural and geotechnical engineers headquartered in San Francisco. Associated with architectural and design firms for the majority of his 40-year career, he has experience and insights into a wide range of communication, financial and organization development strategies.
Fournier maintains an active presence in the Bay Area design community where he helped to establish the Bay Area Academy of Architecture for Justice and served in fundraising and Committee leadership roles. In addition to his role on the SCUP Pacific Regional Council, he also serves on the Board of the Society for Marketing Professional Services/San Francisco Chapter and is also active in ULI and CREW.
The 360 Newsletter
Like what you see? Hate it? Want more/less of…? We’re revamping the 360 Newsletter to better connect the members in our region to each other, what’s happening, and provide a resource for learning more about our region and its members. The recent issues offer a glimpse of some of the regular features and format we’d like to offer. We would like your feedback as members on what you would like to see in the Newsletter as we develop it.
Some ideas include:
• Regular conference features
• Members features
• Topical, “what’s happening in the region?” features
• Highlighting institutions, states in our region.
What are your ideas? We want to hear from you. Please contact Cheryl Lentini at clentini@bparch.com with your thoughts, comments, and suggestions for the newsletter.
