Conference Theme

Join your colleagues and GET ENGAGED—in planning that is!

Engaged Planning: Discover, Discuss, Decide will put new meaning into the term “Planning” as the SCUP Mid-Atlantic Region offers one of the most exciting and innovative conferences ever.

From the moment you step into the opening plenary session until the closing session two days later, you will be involved, inspired and informed by the events surrounding our planning charrettes!

Opening Plenary

Sunday, March 14
5:30PM - 6:30PM

Neil KerwinOn April 21, 2008 American University joined more than 500 other universities around the United States by signing the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment. Dr. Cornelius Kerwin, President of American University will share his perspective and thoughts on the role and importance of leadership in complying with the President’s Climate Commitment and advancing campus sustainability.

Conference Location

All sessions will be held at Hodson Hall on Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus.

Opened in 2002, Hodson Hall is a three-story, 48,000-square foot building that contains state-of-the-art classrooms and lecture halls, an auditorium, meeting space for the university's board of trustees, and the archives of the Hodson Trust and the Beneficial Corp.

Program Overview

We will divide the attendees into three groups comprised of three teams each (9 in all) to tackle:

  1. Physical constraints and opportunities of a campus site
  2. The internal institutional constraints and opportunities (e.g., enrollment, curriculum, staffing, etc.)
  3. The external constraints and opportunities (e.g. the political, economic, technological,  and social climates)

Sunday evening all will come together and listen to an opening presentation that will set the tone for the charrette discussions throughout the conference.

Monday morning the various teams will attend presentations relevant to the three focus areas mentioned above. Lunch will prove lively as teams re-form to begin sharing strategies and observations related to their specific area that will carry over into the afternoon sessions.

Tuesday, adopting a modified charrette process, each of the nine teams will begin the process of proposing solutions for their focus area. Never participated in a charrette? No worries, a team of experienced charrette leaders will be there to assist all along the way.

Groups will provide a brief report to the larger conference participants, and a panel of prestigious SCUP member University presidents will select best team presentations.
