Conference Theme

Surviving the Battle: Reshaping the Future

Southern Sheriff Logo

Join us in San Antonio for the 2011 Southern Regional Conference!

The conference committee is looking forward to providing you with an inspiring conference in beautiful, historic, San Antonio.

The examples of the Alamo were very influential in developing this year’s theme. The Alamo fighters joined together,  made sacrificial decisions, and took a stand for what was important—freedom and independence.

Many institutions are facing a similar battle for their very survival! While the Alamo waited for help that never arrived, institutions are actively seeking the competition and/or corporations as partners for future success. These institutions are stretched to their structural limits due to a lack of available resources. Surviving is their new mission. As a result, some privates have been sold to for-profits while others have partnered with for-profits to achieve their visions of educating students and creating new knowledge. Others have used corporate partners to provide in-kind services to fund a capital project when state appropriations are inadequate. All this new collaboration has involved crossing over previous lines in the sand to converge all parties toward accomplishing a specific goal.

  • How are diverse parties motivated to simultaneously look toward each other to create a single vision?
  • And what is that single vision or goal change when both non-profits and for-profits are involved?
  • What are the tough decisions and probable pitfalls?
  • What are the shared values and desired outcomes?
  • What are the planning strategies for success?
  • How are the mission and the traditional values of an institution affected when rather strange bedfellows attempt to cohabitate?
  • What will arise when two varying perspectives collide in an attempt to survive?
  • What is the prognosis for higher education?

Location! Location! Location!

San Antonio’s River Walk, Spanish colonial architecture, and fountain-laden parks and plazas make it one of America’s most picturesque cities. Today, this seventeenth-century metropolis is the seventh largest city in the nation with contemporary venues and lavish accommodations, all while maintaining an old world heritage exuded through diverse artistry, ethnic cuisine and an intimate and exquisite culture.

Come be a part of this exciting face-to-face event!
