Performance based funding is a model that can work effectively at the level of the entire institution (e.g., within state systems) and within institutions (e.g., college and unit levels). Four keys to success in these approaches will be discussed: (1) understanding and articulating the goal of performance funding clearly; (2) establishing inclusive planning and implementation teams; (3) building consensus on the measures and definitions of success; and (4) staying the course over time.
