Title: Provosts' Perspective

Presenter(s) Info: Brenda Allen, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Winston-Salem State University | Nicholas R. Santilli, Lead Facilitator, Society for College and University Planning | Peter Stearns, Provost & Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs, George Mason University

Institutional leaders will offer their perspectives and observations on educational quality and assessment, international education and globalization, technology and online learning, and what makes a successful provost. How are they creating environments where innovation and academic excellence flourish—against the backdrop of shifting demography, an emerging government-driven higher education rating system, the surge in digital education, new strategies for teaching, and shrinking resources?

Chronicle of Higher Education article:
Reflections from a Global Provost
Peter Stearns, with more than 14 years in his role as provost, shares his dos and don'ts on how to make a university more international.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Get an "insiders" perspective on the major challenges facing higher education in 2014, together with a sense of the most salient responses being pursued at a cross-section of institutions.
  2. Learn what challenges and issues academic leaders are focusing on in their everyday work.
  3. Understand how these institutional officers, program initiators, and leaders of the faculty perceive their leadership role in these challenging times.
  4. Strengthen your understanding of the role of the provost, and the ways they create and foster educational innovation
