It’s time for the next generation Campus Facilities Inventory!

From 2004 to 2007, SCUP created the Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) to provide valuable facilities benchmarking data to colleges and universities to inform their integrated planning efforts.

As leaders of colleges and universities continue to analyze changes today and plan for the future, the knowledge and insight from the SCUP community is critical. In response, SCUP is excited to announce the launching of the 2021 report.

The 2021 CFI will help college and university leaders understand not only what they have now and how it compares, but also how things might change in the future.

From January 26 – March 19, 2021, all higher education institutions in the US are invited to complete SCUP’s CFI survey. Participants of the survey will receive a report with findings, trends, and data tables sorted by institution type, size, and location free and first.

On January 26, one person from each institution within the SCUP database was sent an email to complete the survey.

Complete this form to let us know you would like to ensure your institution is part of the survey. The survey responder should be someone who has knowledge of your institution’s space use, someone who could forward the survey to the appropriate respondee, or one who will collaborate with others on your campus to respond to the survey questions.

What questions are asked on the 2021 CFI survey?

The CFI survey consists of three sections that will provide a holistic picture of today — while enabling institutions to crowd-source a vision for the future. The three sections include:

1. Current space use data: Participating institutions will input how much space they have in each category such as classrooms, labs, offices, study, athletics/rec, dining/events, support, and residential;
2. Anticipated changes to space: Participating institutions will then input the quantitative changes they foresee – which types of space will be going up (i.e., labs and studios?), which will be going down (i.e., offices?), and roughly by how much, and;
3. Qualitative space changes: Participating institutions will then complement this by identifying the qualitative changes they have made in 2020 and identifying other qualitative changes they are contemplating for 2021 (i.e., exiting leases, more night and weekend scheduling, etc.)

The CFI survey must be completed online. View the questions in advance so you know who you may want to include as you prepare your survey response.

Data will be reported only in aggregate, protecting the privacy of each institution. Initial reporting will focus on findings and comparison tables by institution type (i.e., four-year public, four-year private, and two-year public), location (i.e., urban, suburban, rural), and size (i.e., enrollment, ­>1,000, 1,000 – 4,999, 5,000 – 19,999, <20,000).

Who will receive the 2021 CFI Survey?

All US higher education institutions are encouraged to participate in the survey.

SCUP members – the survey was sent on January 26, to one person in each institution who would likely be the survey respondent for that college or university.

My institution is not a SCUP member. How can my institution participate?

Complete this survey to let us know you would like to have your institution included in the report. This would be someone who has knowledge of your institution’s space use, someone who could forward the survey to the appropriate respondee, or one who will collaborate with others on your campus to respond to the survey questions.

Why participate in the 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory?

The CFI survey results and analysis will be free to survey participants, and they will receive the earliest distribution of the results.

Access critical national data on US higher education current and projected space use to inform your own integrated planning, decision-making, and benchmarking. Identify national trends on changes institutions have made recently, and the changes they are planning for the future relative to their facilities portfolio.

2021 Survey Timeline

January – Survey distributed to participating institutions
March 19 – Survey closes
April – Survey results and analysis distributed to survey participants, then available to everyone for a fee.
