Abstract: First generation and marginalized students often have difficulty accessing campus services. Holistically supporting students through integrated services so that they feel valued, respected, and included is critical to graduation and retention rates. The University of Arizona (UA) radically transformed access to student services, bringing together previously disparate services into the co-located Student Success District that renews existing campus assets into accessible, flexible, human-centric spaces. This session will share a model for bridging strategic and facilities planning with universal principles and qualitative and quantitative metrics for leveraging existing programs and building resources to improve student outcomes.

Abstract: Today’s students are coming to school with diverse gender identities. Designing facilities with gender equity in mind helps to support marginalized communities and future proof the campus. This session will present case studies and inclusive best practices for ‘designing beyond the binary’ to foster belonging in campus housing, restrooms, and gathering spaces. You’ll discover strategies to foster belonging and wellbeing for a spectrum of gender identities through programming and operations as well as learn about design tools and tips to create belonging in spatial environments.

Abstract: Individuals with disabilities are not a homogeneous group and planners and designers have an ethical responsibility to shape the physical campus environment in response to their needs. Using the University of California (UC), Berkeley as a contextual framework, we’ll examine how past planning efforts have shaped the campus through an accessibility lens, how the disability rights movement has defined disability, and how current models are shaping our understanding of equitable access. Looking beyond prescriptive codes, join us to explore how to transform old frameworks and infrastructure into inclusive and functional spaces, leaning into equitable experience and access.

Abstract: Planning for inclusive spaces where students can see themselves and achieve success requires critical approaches, diverse perspectives, and representative processes. This session will explore ways of incorporating indigenous experiences and perspectives into the process of placemaking, using The Evergreen State College’s (TESC) renovation of the Seminar 1 building?Äîhome of the Native Pathways Program?Äîas a case study. Abstract: The growth of the University of Calgary’s Veterinary Medicine program has been a catalyst for several initiatives on campus, including the development of a long range plan, creation of an inclusive program, and development of micro degrees. The process of engagement, programming, and design at Vet Med was critical for understanding the urgent needs of the profession and students while being mindful and respectful of the history of place and the indigenous community. This session show how connecting the history of place at a campus master planning and programming level fosters opportunities, success, health, and wellbeing for each student.

Abstract: Students’ sense of belonging is strongly connected to wellbeing and academic success. How does a student develop a sense of belonging and mattering and what does that look like in the campus built environment? In this session, we’ll explore the critical themes of belonging and mattering for design in higher education to illustrate how design choices can shape student experiences. Join us to explore how you can asses campus spaces for belonging and mattering and make quick design interventions to effect meaningful change.

Abstract: The jobs that power our economy are evolving daily and educational facilities must keep ahead of workforce demands in order to stay relevant to the students they serve. This is especially true for community colleges with vocational curricula, which have historically helped to lead communities out of recessions. Come learn how you can modify your educational facilities in response to emerging vocations and work with local laws, grants, and industry partners to build for changing curricula.

Abstract: Higher education must be observant to remain relevant. Institutional leadership and faculty can help close the workforce capacity gap by making meaningful connections with prospective students, the workforce, and industry partners. Metropolitan Community College (MCC) is changing their pipeline to increase workforce capacity by engaging nontraditional students in addition to re-evaluating academic and physical availability on their campus. In this session, you'll learn how you can enhance awareness of untapped populations to meet industry goals, evaluate opportunities to improve growth outcomes, and grow industry sponsorship investment through academic and equipment planning at your institution.

Abstract: STEM facilities are quickly catching up to unions as the heart of student life on campus. To better support student recruitment, retention, and success, STEM facilities must provide a mashup of social and academic space that students need for sparking connections, partnerships, and friendships. We'll explore this growing trend and introduce strategies for making STEM facilities hubs for campus life. Join us to gain a solid understanding of the trends shaping the future of STEM facilities, including a look inside the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's future-forward chemistry building.

Abstract: We have a responsibility to make our campus buildings as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This session will share how Purdue University transformed its campus from a transactional place to an inviting, welcoming, and inclusive one. Intentionality plays an important role in a building's redesign; planners must focus on both the building's original intent and how to use its assets to fulfill modern needs. We'll take you through our process of transforming an iconic campus building that relates to today's students through environmental messaging while also celebrating the institution, its community, and its history.
