Smart Building, Smart Campus

This is a SCUP Fellow Research Project Final Report for the 2019–2020 program. This report explores the hypothesis that user-centered design would better address STEM student needs and could increase the likelihood of a broader adoption of remote labs.
Abstract: “Will innovative environments like a smart building expand STEM education and reach more underrepresented groups? If technology can support remote work, then why haven’t the previous proofs of concept become fully adopted?” The author pursued these questions through her SCUP Fellows research, exploring the hypothesis that user-centered design would better address STEM student needs and could increase the likelihood of a broader adoption of remote labs. Although the COVID-19 pandemic required a hard pivot in her research plan, she was able to leverage the world's new focus on remote activities and work with students to design a prototype mobile application for a digital, interactive twin of a STEM building on campus.

The research project by SCUP Fellow Angie Foss was to explore the opportunities to bring online learners virtually into Southern New Hampshire University’s new, state-of-the-art Innovation and Design Education building for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics. Her research included the development of two modes of delivery—remote labs and augmented reality/virtual interactions—and she also discusses the impact to the project by the immediate shift to all-remote learning due to COVID-19.
Abstract: SNHU recently built a state-of-the-art engineering facility called the Innovation and Design Education building (IDE), for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA).

The research project by SCUP Fellow Angie Foss was to explore the opportunities to bring online learners virtually into this new physical space to provide rich and meaningful learning experiences for students. Her research included the development of two modes of delivery: remote labs and augmented reality/virtual interactions. Abstract: Austin Community College District (ACCD) has adapted to changing times and students’ evolving needs by using an integrated planning process, focusing on the future of education, and designing for flexibility. We’ll explore how ACCD transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future. In this session, you’ll learn how you can use the Highland Campus as a successful model for planning and developing new and existing campuses that enhance student success and prepare institutions for change.

We will demonstrate how SNHU benchmarked engineering schools, helping SNHU envision their idea for a new school and identify state-of-the-art learning environments.
Abstract: Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) started an engineering program when they purchased Daniel Webster College and inherited a strong aeronautics program, students, and faculty looking for a new educational home. SNHU, well-known for online education programs, continues to develop its traditional campus through its new College of Engineering, Technology and Aeronautics, which they planned to accommodate multiple modalities reflecting 2019 and beyond as well as exemplify academic rigor. We will demonstrate how SNHU benchmarked engineering schools, helping SNHU envision their idea for a new school and identify state-of-the-art learning environments.
