Located in Stony Brook, NY, Stony Brook University, widely regarded as a SUNY flagship, was established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science. The Facilities at Stony Brook:
Stony Brook University is one of four research-intensive campuses within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Situated on 1,454 wooded acres, the campus encompasses 12 schools and colleges; a Research and Development Park; world-class athletics facilities, including an 8,300-seat stadium and a 4,000-seat arena; and Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island’s premier academic medical center. The University has over 10,000 student beds on campus. Also part of the University is a teaching and research campus in Southampton, New York, which is home to graduate arts and medical professional degree programs and the Marine Sciences Center; and a classroom and meeting site in Manhattan. Facilities & Services is able to provide the essential services for building, operating, and maintaining Stony Brook University on its four campuses: Main Campus, Stony Brook Southampton, Research and Development Park, and Stony Brook Manhattan.
As a state university, Stony Brook has access to capital funding from a number of sources to support its facilities needs. In construction on campus today is: a 240,000 GSF medical research and teaching facilities and patient tower scheduled to open this spring, a 62,000 GSF high-tech business incubator building entering final fit-out; an indoor sports practice facility opening in the fall; a complete renovation of the student union for next winter; and the first of several dormitory projects. Currently in design with funding plans underway are two additional residence halls, including their first public private partnership structured project, the fourth building in the R&D park to house cutting edge medical and engineering research, a new engineering academic building, and the complete renovation of the large chemistry teaching and research facility. In addition to new construction, the campus manages about $50M a year in capital maintenance projects.
Stony Brook Medicine encompasses a vibrant health sciences campus ‚Äî immediately east and in direct continuity with the University’s Main Campus ‚Äî that serves as home to the five health sciences schools: Health Technology and Management, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Renaissance School of Medicine, Social Welfare; Stony Brook University Hospital, a 603-bed nationally renowned tertiary care and safety net hospital for the entire region; and the Long Island State Veterans Home. Vice President for Facilities and Services
As the senior Facilities and Construction officer for the University, the Vice President for Facilities and Services supports the mission, vision, and overall advancement of the University and is responsible for providing a well-maintained, sustainable campus. Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, the incumbent is responsible for oversight of University facilities operations and design and construction activity, as well as environmental health and safety at all locations. This includes strategic development and management of SUNY Stony Brook’s physical space, providing executive leadership for the management of capital resources dedicated to the acquisition and construction of facilities that support the growth of the organization and
facilities maintenance operations.
As a senior leader of the University, the Vice President advises University leadership on all matters related to facilities management, capital planning, and construction, and works cooperatively and collaboratively with other campus offices and departments, key campus and hospital administration, faculty, and staff to ensure the effective use of resources. The Vice President also provides strategic oversight of all facilities department budgets to ensure effective allocation, and use of funds and works with the Offices of Administration, Budget, and Planning, and key SUNY system offices on the annual capital budget process to ensure adequate funding of construction, renovation, and maintenance projects. The Vice President will represent the University as the primary liaison for all matters related to construction and campus operations in advocacy and coordination with external constituencies, including the State University of New York, State University Construction Fund, regulatory organizations, and service unions.
Duties and Essential Job Functions:
-Strategic thinker who creates clear communication channels, sets goals, improves efficiency, and continuously improves client satisfaction.

-Oversee campus design and construction activities, including building renovation projects and major construction projects.
-Lead the development, oversight, and execution of multi-year campus capital construction plans, including academic, research, housing and support services and clinical spaces.
-Collaborate with executive leadership on institutional projects and issues, including facilities needs, risk management, emergency preparedness, and response and sustainability.
-Oversee all communications regarding facilities and related services with the State University Construction Fund, Dormitory Authority, SUNY System Administration, and other state agencies and regulatory entities.
-Effectively protect institutional interests in capital projects and work collaboratively with colleagues in the finance function to ensure appropriate fiscal controls for capital projects.
-Ensure compliance with all building code regulations, including the coordination of all building code compliance and regulatory reporting to the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Environmental Conservation, Department of Health, Department of Public Works, SUNY System Administration, State University Construction Fund, and other government agencies and regulatory authorities.
-Supervise all landlord and tenant operations in the Research and Development Park in support of the VP for research and economic development.
-Assess and evaluate decision-making processes for short-term and long-term space allocation, utilization, and management.
-Responsible for the development and implementation of facilities master plan, as well as sustainability master plan for all campuses.
-Serve as a partner and collaborator with the ability to build consensus and cooperative working relationships amongst the facilities teams while building an atmosphere of customer orientation and raising the level of service of the entire organization.
-Manage staff, including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, development, evaluation, and accountability. Meet regularly with staff to review activities, address all matters which may impact efficiency, and propose and implement changes as necessary to ensure staff meets departmental and individual goals.
Provide leadership to areas of facilities operations and services, including:
-Campus physical plant, including maintenance and operations services, building trades for campus repairs (including Academic, research and housing facilities, Research and Development Park, and other economic development sites and Southampton Campus); custodial services; grounds management; and utilities management, including heating and cooling plants, cogeneration plants, and utility distribution systems.
-Mail service and warehousing operations, as well as recycling and energy conservation programs.
-Sustainable facilities management programs, as well as the creation and management of renewable energy projects.
-Environmental health and safety programs and services, including fire safety assessment, training and inspection protocols, laboratory evaluations, inspection and safety training programs, radiation safety compliance programs, and enforcement.
-Parking, transportation, and fleet management.
-Emergency preparedness and response.
