California State University Dominguez Hills was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University System. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of approximately 14,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. The University, with its five Academic Colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people, and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services.
Conditions of Employment:
Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and reflects driving record. Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.
Department: Toro Learning & Testing Center
The Toro Learning & Testing Center (TLTC) offers a variety of academic support to all currently enrolled CSU Dominguez Hills students. The center promotes student self-responsibility for academic success, so whether students are trying to maintain a high GPA, struggling to pass a difficult course, are in need of proctoring services, or selecting to take the Graduate Writing Exam (GW), the center is here to help them succeed in achieving their academic goals. The Toro Learning & Testing Center contributes to the Universitys strategic plan on student success, increasing retention and graduation rates, and closing the achievement gap.
Major Job Duties:
Under general supervision of the Director of the Toro Learning & Testing Center, the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Coordinator provides student academic support programs and services designed to facilitate successful student persistence and timely degree completion. Provides moderately complex academic advisement to students on issues which affect their personal functioning, academic performance and professional development. The SI Coordinator contributes significantly to creating and sustaining a supportive educational environment for students enrolled in high DFW courses. The incumbent will develop, plan, and facilitate training curriculum and provide a supportive team environment for peer educators. In collaboration with the Senior Coordinator and Math Learning Specialist, the incumbent coordinates the development, operations and assessment of the SI Program. The incumbent coordinates outreach and promotes to colleges, students, faculty, and staff as necessary to apprise them on the SI program objectives and operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Sensitivity to transitional issues and needs among first-year/first-generation college students - Ability to multi-task with effective time distribution and organization skills - Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. - Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. - Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. - Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. - Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization. - Ability to use standard office software, including spreadsheet and database applications to generate analytical reports. - Ability to use creativity in generating business solutions in a fast-paced working environment. - Possession of presentation and project distribution skills. - Ability to function effectively as part of a high performance team. -Demonstrate professional competence and indicate the potential for further growth. - Working knowledge of university policies and procedures - Knowledge of student development and learning theory - Experience in educational counseling, teaching, tutoring, peer learning assistance programs or related work experience in higher education - Ability to communicate complex ideas and processes in a manner that is understood by professionals with varying backgrounds and responsibilities at the University.
Experience and Education:
Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
The salary range for this classification is: $4,304 – $6,120 monthly.
