The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach activities..
FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.
Our campus customers include anyone who works, studies, visits, or lives on campus.
This position provides space analysis and planning services within the Space Management Office at UW Madison. The Space Management Office, with the Division of Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M), provides the analytical infrastructure for informed decisions about the University’s space utilization and the higher education learning environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of the Space Management Office.
The Space Management Office collects and maintains room-level data in UW-Madison’s space inventory system for approximately 29 million gross square feet across owned and leased facilities.
The planner will be responsible for producing facility scenarios based on direct engagement with schools, colleges, divisions, and facilities leadership. The scenario plans will include space programs, preliminary space designs, and order of magnitude estimates. This also includes planning for project sequencing, surge space, and relocation in coordination with Space Management staff and other FP&M units.
The successful candidate must be able to translate the functional needs of schools, colleges, and divisions into facility programs and plans that are coordinated with Space Management standards and FP&M planning and project priorities. These detailed facility scenarios are critical to the efficient allocation of UW-Madison’s physical and financial assets, and directly support prioritization decisions for major and minor projects. The incumbent must be comfortable working in a highly iterative, multi-year planning environment.
The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently while maintaining strong team relationships.

Bachelor’s degree with major studies in architecture, space planning, or related field required.
– A minimum of 7 years’ experience in architecture, design, space planning, or related field
– Experience leading facility programming projects and teams
– Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, MS Office including Excel, Word, and Outlook
– 8+ years’ experience in architecture, design, space planning, or related field
– Experience with data visualization software (i.e. – Tableau, BIRT)
– Knowledge of administrative structure and functional requirements of facilities in higher education
– Knowledge of Higher Education Facilities Inventory Classification Manual (FICM) space codes
– Advanced proficiency with scripting/automation in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Excel
