About This Organization

The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach activities.

FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.

Our campus customers include anyone who works, studies, visits, or lives on campus.

Sphere of Operations
FP&M’s sphere of operations extends to the entire 936-acre UW campus and includes buildings and grounds, walkways and roadways, parking lots, vehicles, and utility generation and distribution systems. On the main campus, this includes 420 buildings containing more than 17 million assignable square feet (ASF) of academic and research space and more than 25 million total gross square feet (GSF). More than 120 of these buildings house major instructional and research facilities. More than 83 percent of these buildings are at least 25 years old and 79 percent are at least 35 years old. There are also more than 9,500 acres of off-campus property.

The annual operating budget of FP&M is $227 million. FP&M has also managed $3 billion of capital projects since 2000.

Job Duties

The Division of Facilities Planning & Management, Capital Planning & Development, Project Manager is responsible for the administration, planning, and management of capital projects that are critical to developing and maintaining campus facilities. In addition, this position is responsible for developing scope/budget documents for the biennial capital building process. The project manager serves as a campus representative during all phases of design and construction for major maintenance and construction projects, which include instructional, research, auxiliary, and academic spaces. This position will manage multiple projects simultaneously with project budgets ranging from approximately $10K to $100M. The person in this role will represent campus needs and interests with other State agencies in the design of university facilities, in setting related guidelines and in making operational decisions.

This position works closely and manages work in collaboration with other departments including other units within Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M), UW System Administration, the Division of Facilities Development, campus divisions and departments, and architectural/engineering consultants. The person in this role will have a high degree of independence.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management from an accredited institution of higher education.

For Facilities Architect, Engineer, or Construction Management applicants, registration as a Professional Architect or Engineer is strongly preferred.

Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is desirable.

Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design/construction and project management.

Demonstrated experience in managing building and infrastructure design projects from inception through construction and closeout.

Demonstrated experience in site planning & coordination, good understanding of utilities and MEP coordination, air/water/thermal barriers, experience coordinating design to work within a campus setting, experience in many different functional type, experience in the selection of interior building materials and finishes, space planning, and development of interior details.

Demonstrated experience in developing project and construction cost estimates and schedules.
