Conditions of Employment:

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Position Information:

This is a full-time, temporary position.

Special Working Conditions: Able to work a varied schedule or hours as needed.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Department: Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences

The College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences is one of four main instructional units of the university. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is an academic unit within the College with programs designed to provide students with intensive, progressive and balanced learning experiences in the physical sciences with several offerings: undergraduate programs and minor programs.

Major Job Duties:

Under supervision of the Dean, College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences (CNBS), the incumbent is responsible for overseeing the preparation of all lower and upper division chemistry labs which include: organizing materials, preparing chemical concentration reagents, and materials for lab demonstrations, cleaning and maintaining of instructional laboratories and lab rooms, maintaining department computer labs and overseeing lab safety equipment, biohazard and organic/inorganic waste disposal. Incumbent will be present when general chemistry I and II labs are is in session; maintain the general chemistry stockroom and balance room, and interact with lab instructor when called upon for assistance or supplies. Handle issues regarding the chemical stores, inventories materials, orders supplies and troubleshoot equipment belonging to the chemistry department. Is expected to be familiar with usage, storage, and data generated by both technical and non technical laboratory equipment. Repairs and services technical equipment. Will review and follow the requirements of the campus Chemical Hygiene Plan and all safety policies. Recognize commonality between services required for various chemistry courses and for developing systems for maximizing utilization of departments infrastructures, for example, materials supply and chemical reagents.

Qualifications:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
– Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services such as chemical nomenclature and solution preparation and standardization.
– Knowledge of the principles, information, methods and techniques related to discipline to which assigned.
– Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, their characteristics and uses.
– Knowledge of the applicable CSU policies and procedures related to this job as pertain by CSUEU Bargain Unit

Ability:
– Ability to plan, organize and schedule work.
– Ability to operate and repair technical and non-technical scientific equipment.
– Familiar with basic laboratory safety EHOS/OSHA regulations (GSH).
– Ability to coordinate support service to meet a comprehensive variety of needs.
– Ability to make and prepare chemical solutions for laboratory uses.
– Ability to use and properly store technical and non technical equipment.
– Communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate with staff, students, professionals and the public.
– Demonstrated skill in organization of tasks, documents and materials.
– Demonstrated skills using Windows and Macintosh operating systems and commonly used office applications (MS Office, Internet, etc.)
– Ability to work in humid, hazardous, hot, cold, dry and wet environments.
– Ability to safely move and lift materials, equipment and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
– Ability to work night and weekend shifts if needed.

Experience and Education:
Required Education:
Bachelors of Arts/Bachelors of Science or minor in Chemistry or Biochemistry is preferred or between 3-5 years of laboratory experience in the industry as a lab technician.

Required Experience:
Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline,
acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline.

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

or

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this classification is: $3,419 – 6,007 monthly.
