Iowa State University of Science and Technology (Iowa State University or Iowa State) is a public land-grant research university in Ames, Iowa. The Facilities Planning and Management department is seeking applicants for the Director of Planning Services position. This position leads the Planning Services unit responsible for university campus planning, land development, space management, classroom scheduling, and maintenance of facilities and real estate inventory. The Director will oversee the development of university capital projects and capital plan, and assist with the development and execution of university real estate actions. Will represent the university on planning and development issues and projects with other government agencies, including the City of Ames and Story County. This position will direct master planning efforts of in-house staff and consultants for long-range development of campus facilities, land use, transportation, open space and other infrastructure. The Director will lead facilities planning studies, analyze space requirements of university units relative to existing assets, and develop solutions to address shortfalls or surpluses. In coordination with the university registrar, the Director will oversee the development of semester class and exam schedules for general university classrooms, as well as track and report on the utilization and general condition of university teaching spaces. The unit is also responsible for the university facilities and space utilization inventories, researching and maintaining real property records, and reporting as required to the Board of Regents and State of Iowa.
The successful candidate will have exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to articulate the needs of the university to team members and stake holders. The candidate will have the ability to analyze problems and apply strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
Required Minimum Quals:
Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of related experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture or urban, community or regional planning from accredited college or university.
Licensed architect or certification by American Institute of Certified Planners.
7 years of progressive experience in planning for private or public organizations, including experience with facilities inventory of similar scope to Iowa State University, of which 3 years were as a supervisor.
Experience in supervision of workforce consisting of planners and space managers.
Experience in communications, both verbal and written, with varying audiences such as senior university leadership and other government agencies.
Experience in management of contracts for facilities studies and planning.
Experience with real estate actions, such as purchases, sales, leases and easements.
