Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) invites applications for a Director of Facilities (Physical Plant Manager) position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2019. Full-time position, $74,625 – $107,344/year.

Responsibilities: The Director of Facilities is responsible for planning, directing and administering the maintenance and operation of the Physical Plant of the University, including budget planning and management. This position directs and coordinates the planning, design, construction, and/or alteration of the University’s physical facilities and serves as the Facility representative on campus, with the system office, and in the community. This position is responsible for the Comprehensive Facilities Plan and Physical Plant strategic planning.

Qualification for the position include:
-Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Architecture, Engineering, Facilities Construction Management or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and a minimum of 10 years of experience in facilities and/or physical plant management or administration.
-Understanding of construction plans and specifications and have a general knowledge of mechanical trades systems. General knowledge of grounds and maintenance (housekeeping) operations. Ability to review and research alternative building and construction methods. Ability to read technical information. Knowledge of applicable codes related to the development, maintenance, and construction of facilities, state and local building, safety and health codes, occupational hazards and safe work practices of the building maintenance trades.
-Ability to study, plan, research, write reports, analyze budgets and keep accounts and records. Must be able to effectively and efficiently manage fiscal resources.
-Ability and experience to organize, plan, manage, and direct major facilities projects and to analyze and allocate between competing demands and priorities to make decisions in the best interest of the University.
-Knowledge of administrative procedures for consultant selection, contract preparation, negotiating and execution, public bidding requirements, construction cost estimating, financial accounting, project scheduling and construction administration.
-Experience working with public sector capital financing and relevant rules regarding use of funds for eligible purposes
-Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects is required as is the ability to choose between alternatives that provide the greatest benefit to the University based on competing factors.
-Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of constituent groups and to supervise others is essential, as is the ability to organize work of a large work force, plan strategically, present information and exhibit leadership skills. Ability to maximize the use of a large staff which must interactively and cooperatively work together to accomplish tasks is necessary.
-Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
-Valid Driver’s License.

Required Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:
– Master’s degree
– Experience working in higher education
– Exposure working with web-based construction management software tools (e.g. e-Builder)
