Job Duties

This position is in the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department that reports to the Associate Vice President for Facilities, Planning, Construction & Safety (FPCS).

Responsible for developing, implementing and administering a comprehensive program to provide a safe campus environment for work and study, and to establish and maintain compliance with federal, state, local environmental laws, rules and regulations that are applicable to the total university physical environment and populace.

Responsible for developing and implementing the following programs: fire safety, laboratory safety, hazardous waste management, public health safety, laboratory animal care, life safety and a building code administration program.

Responsible for establishing University-wide policies, procedures and contingency (emergency) plans in keeping with federal and state laws pertaining to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Policies such as: Hazardous waste management, radiation safety, bio-hazardous waste safety, laboratory safety, public health, industrial hygiene, laboratory medical animal care, fire safety, life safety, asbestos and lead-based paint management, right-to-know (understand) compliance and OSHA compliance.

Coordinates and oversees special projects, studies, reports, etc. as directed by the Associate VP for FPCS to include reporting to State agencies (State Fire Marshall, DEP, BOG, other, SUS Universities, etc.)

Provides leadership for the EHS Department, ensuring that the goals and objectives are communicated to applicable staff and achieved within the department’s business processes.

Develops University-wide programs to educate, encourage management and supervise personnel to carry out EHS policies and procedures in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for the university community and public.

Inputs data into AIM database and maintains appropriate tracking of work orders for EHS Departments.

Informs subordinates of all relevant University Regulations and Internal Operating Procedures and provides access to all related documents; Assesses and documents subordinate’s ability to comply with all relevant University Regulations and Internal Operating Procedures; Employs measures of accountability for compliance with University Regulations and Internal Operating Procedures; & Conducts and documents performance evaluations in a timely manner for each subordinate, in accordance with University Regulations and Internal Operating Procedures.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Environmental, Engineering or Health related field and five (5) eight (8) years of related experience; or Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six (6) years of related experience.


Salary range is between $90,000 to $100,000 commensurate with relevant experience.
