The Department of Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) enriches the University of Arizona with facilities that inspire and maximize the success of students, faculty and staff. To help meet the challenges of this program, PDC is seeking a Construction Architect to join our innovative team to successfully manage a wide variety of challenging projects involving diverse building types in one of the largest University building programs in the country. The successful candidate must have project management expertise to efficiently and cost effectively develop, manage and coordinate design and construction projects. While this position requires extensive experience in successful design and a sound understanding of current architectural practices, the Senior Architect’s role will be to manage the efforts of design professionals and lead teams of project stakeholders to produce successful, efficient facilities on schedule and in budget in the best interest of the University of Arizona on behalf of the Arizona Board of Regents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Effective Project Leadership:
Ensure the quality and success of projects by managing consultants’ design and recommend design modifications as required in the best interest of the University of
Demonstrate successful project leadership by defining, developing and meeting project requirements, goals, budget, and
Take ownership and be the champion of assigned projects. Effectively lead project teams of design professionals, facility users, and various University departments by exemplifying high standards.
Provide organization, leadership, and coordination to the project team.
Facilitate and seek fair, consensual resolutions to project challenges, issues and conflicts.
Facilitate Project Coordination and Communication:
Serve as project representative and provide appropriate opportunities to facilitate input from project delivery teams and other
Coordinate and communicate project related issues and
Report current status and coordinate future milestones of projects to all relevant stakeholders and
Communicate and coordinate effectively with project delivery teams and facility users to develop project scope, design, budget, and schedule requirements that meet user needs and are in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents, University of Arizona and Planning, Design & Construction policies, guidelines and
Assist Facilities Project Managers in resolution of design issues during
Provide Project Review and Management:
Review project documentation to ensure project requirements, quality of design, and compliance with University design standards, as well as appropriate codes and
Ensure quality and success of design and construction by management of design and/or construction team, review of construction documents, and diligent observation of
Effectively negotiate contracts, agreements and related documents. Provide timely and accurate management of documents and processes.
Special Assignments and Committees:
Contribute positive input to efforts such as Search Committees and Process Improvement
Assist in maintenance of University’s Design

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field AND five years of architectural experience (including design project management); OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education; AND, registration as an Architect in the State of Arizona or the ability to become registered within 3 months of start date.
Ability to work as a cooperative team player and communicate effectively with a diverse group.
Demonstrated experience in successful team leadership and management.
Knowledge and experience in design and construction administration issues and
Knowledge of sustainable design, particularly USGBC LEED
Knowledge of current design standards for complex laboratories (wet and dry).
Ability to lead project teams through complicated design processes involving scope compromises, tight budgets and fast-track
Project management experience as an owner’s
Experience delivering a project while working with or for a public entity.
Experience managing design projects involving complex laboratories (wet & dry).
Experience managing design projects in an educational environment that would include design and construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings, such as: classrooms, residence halls, athletic facilities, student unions and medical
Demonstrated skill and experience in contract negotiation and administration.
Skill and experience with Construction Manager @ Risk and Design/Build project delivery
