Conditions of Employment:
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Position Information:
This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Department: Athletics

The Athletic department administers an intercollegiate athletic program sponsoring 4 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams.  A member of Division II of the NCAA, CSUDH competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).  Other functions of the unit include public relations, sports information, athletic training, fund-raising, scheduling of campus athletic facilities, and recruitment and retention of student-athletes.  The Department and University place a high priority on academic standards and the personal growth of the student-athlete.

Major Job Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Athletics Director, the incumbent will provide proactive academic support counseling and monitoring of student-athletes academic performance, serves as the Athletics Department’s liaison to the University Advisement Center, works in support of the Director of University Advisement, and monitors institutional graduation and NCAA progress towards degree benchmarks.  The Athletics Student Success Coordinator collaborates with the University Advisement Center to offer Mandatory General Education advisement for student-athletes and is the Athletics Department’s point of contact for New Student Orientation. The incumbent systematically identifies academically under prepared student-athletes and devises individualized plans for academic success, conducts life skills workshops, prepares team travel letters, and is an advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  The incumbent is the point of contact to University Admissions and Records and the Athletics Compliance Director to perform transcript evaluations during the recruitment process to assess University admissions and NCAA academic eligibility requirements.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of individual and group advising;
- Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting information;
- Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing;
- Familiarity with organizational structures and personnel issues.

Abilities to:
- Work with a variety of professional staff, faculty, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions;
- Carry out day-today assignment without immediate directions; 
- Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems; 
- Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, records, and interpret data, advising methods, and the student population;
- Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist;
- Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives.

Skills in:
- Using a personal computer to develop and maintain files.
- Utilizing PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks; 
- Utilizing computer based and interview information to accurately advise students; 
- Utilizing advising contracts and petitions;
- Analyzing and addressing complex academic needs of students; 
- Working with a culturally diverse student population as well as awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups.

Classroom presentation experience with fairly large groups of young adults; experience in training others; excellent critical thinking skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience and Education:
Required Education: 
Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant had acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Required Experience: 
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.  A masters degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this classification is: $4,304 – $6,120 monthly
