Job Duties

As part of an integrated and collaborative team of planning experts, the Associate Planner position provides professional physical planning services for the UC San Diego campus. Responsibilities include preparation of site studies and analyses, including: collection of data and defining planning considerations, technical report writing, development of graphics, interpreting project proposals to assure conformance with campus plans and policies; and supporting standing campus committees and work groups. This position will prepare documents, compile supporting data, develop graphics and perform other related tasks in support of the campus Long Range Development Plan. The Associate Planner will also work with consultants, participate in consultant screening and selection, as well as directing the work of planning consultants for smaller projects. The Associate Planner researches, evaluates and writes reports pertaining to Campus Planning policies and procedures.

The Associate Planner will use skills as a seasoned, experienced planning professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organization policies and procedures and full range of planning skills and expertise and will resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operate with considerable independence in concept planning, project definition and feasibility phases of major construction projects.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from college with major work in city planning, architecture, civil engineering, traffic engineering, or other planning-related fields, and professional experience in city planning (or urban renewal) and large-scale site planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Thorough working knowledge and skill in city planning, architecture, or other planning-related fields. Professional experience in site planning and urban design. Knowledge of site planning standards and criteria for buildings, pedestrian and vehicular circulation, surface and structured parking, service yards and other standards pertinent to site design.

Demonstrated knowledge of comprehensive planning processes and methodologies.

Proven knowledge of computer programs, including word processing, electronic spreadsheets and electronic presentations. Graphic skills experience required in a variety of media areas including: computer drafting, PowerPoint presentations, computer generated graphics and geographic information systems.

Demonstrated ability to research, organize and write planning reports and recommendations in a clear and concise manner.

Strong analytical skills. Ability to identify and research planning issues. Demonstrated resourcefulness in locating sources of information.

Proven administrative/organizational skills. Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and provide good judgment.

Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen. Ability to successfully establish and maintain positive and goal-oriented working relationships with a diverse population.

Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, flexibility and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, administrators, staff and students. Skill in speaking before groups of any size and the ability to explain planning concepts and solutions in a clear and concise manner.
