Within UC Davis, the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is a $40M self-supporting academic division reporting to the Provost. The CPE team includes 200 academic and professional staff who collectively register 70,000 enrollments from all 50 states and more than 100 countries each year. As the lifelong learning arm of the campus, CPE has one of the university’s most extensive educational portfolios, offering academic and non-credit professional certificates, on-campus programs for international students, contract programs for government and corporate clients, conferences and boot camps in a wide array of topical areas. CPE plays a critical role in advancing the university’s outreach mission in service of non-traditional adult learners, and serves as an innovation hub to pioneer new models that may be scaled across the campus.
The Associate Dean plays a key role in the senior leadership of the Division, with core responsibilities in leading academic strategic planning, program growth and innovation, strategic portfolio management, and academic policy and governance. Works to advance the Division’s professional education portfolio to expand access, enhance student success, and meet the needs of a changing workforce. Collaborates with program leaders across the division to surface and prioritize new program opportunities, and mobilize resources to accelerate new development. Partners with the Dean to support major institutional and campus initiatives in online education and regional workforce development, and to execute the Division’s academic strategic plan. Engages with other academic units on the campus to develop, negotiate and manage academic partnerships. Liaises with regional business leaders and groups to represent CPE’s professional education capacities, and contribute to regional economic and workforce development planning. Directly oversees two large academic departments comprising ~100 FTE and generating $30M in revenue from fee-based open enrollment and contract-funded programs delivered regionally, nationally and online. Serves as strategic advisor to the Dean on academic matters, and oversees academic approval of courses and instructors. Engages in system-wide partnerships, policy reforms, and other collaborative initiatives. Promotes an innovative, performance culture that is strategically aligned and goal oriented. Oversees training and mentoring of program staff to ensure strong capacity for delivering high quality, impactful and sustainable programs. Represents the Dean on campus committees and meetings (as needed). The Associate Dean is a visionary leader, strategic thinker, academic entrepreneur, relationship builder and collaborator.
Minimum Qualifications: (must be attained at time of application)
Terminal degree (e.g., MBA, MFA, MPH) or academic doctorate
8 or more years of progressive leadership experience in continuing and professional education, including experience in a senior-level role
Experience in professional and online education
Demonstrated understanding of the mission of university-based continuing education
Track record leading program growth and innovation
Track record of collaboration with diverse constituencies
Exceptional people leadership capacities, experience managing academic personnel
