Assistant Vice President, Office of the Physical Plant

The Pennsylvania State University seeks a highly motivated leader with exceptional strategic, operational, and interpersonal skills to join the Office of Physical Plant (OPP) leadership team. Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) will be responsible for the coordination of the administrative, operational, and financial affairs of the Office of the Physical Plant and will serve as the Deputy Chief Facilities Officer providing support for the technical and business matters pertaining to the wide scope of responsibilities and operating units within OPP and direct OPP`s integration of services across the University. Physical Plant is responsible for the design and construction of facilities, architectural quality, landscapes, capital planning, master planning, maintenance, operations, real estate services, space utilization, utility procurement, and environmental and safety programs. Penn State (excluding Penn State Health and Penn College) consists of 29 million gross square feet made up of over 1400 major buildings. In addition, Penn State leases over 1.5 million square feet of space and owns 22,300 acres including 7,343 acres and 947 buildings at University Park. The Physical Plant workforce consists of over 1,500 skilled technical service and administrative staff with an operating budget of $300 million, which funds plant operations, utilities, and facility maintenance. Envisioned as a deputy, the Assistant Vice President will serve as a leader in the organization by providing strategic planning and development, as well as day-to-day management of Penn State’s facilities. In addition to AVP/Deputy duties for those areas listed above, the AVP: Serves as the OPP key sustainability liaison providing strategic guidance and ensuring integration with OPP’s goals and initiatives; performs strategic reviews of all OPP budgets; oversees all DEP related activity (Air, Water, and other permits); engages with HR, Union leaders and other key stakeholders regarding all OPP labor-management discussions, contractual issues, etc.; and supports special projects and events including oversight of the President’s residence, sports initiatives, special events, etc. The ideal candidate for this position will be a highly collaborative professional with a demonstrated track record of leadership and expertise in physical plant strategy and operations in multiple locations, strong communication, a commitment to transparency and service, exceptional skill in building and maintaining key relationships (internal and external) and the vision and capacity to partner with the OPP leader in all aspects to build and secure operational and strategic excellence throughout the unit. We seek a leader who will embrace the Penn State, Finance and Business division, and Physical Plant vision and values. The right candidate will be able to mentor and coach the OPP Leadership team in formulating and executing our unit’s vision, goals and strategy. The successful candidate will have twelve or more years of relevant experience in a large, complex academic, healthcare, or institutional organization with diverse stakeholders, and an undergraduate degree in a technical related field (Master’s degree and PE or AIA licensing preferred). A proven track record of success completing large-scale capital programs also is required. Penn State is one of the leading public research universities in the nation.
