Facilities Planning and Design is comprised of design professionals who are responsible for the planning, design and management of all capital improvement projects. The projects include new buildings, repairs and renovation of existing buildings, major campus infrastructure, interior design, open space improvements and preservation of historic properties. Facilities Planning and Design ensures that the projects adhere to the principles of adapted land use plan and campus development guidelines.
The position supports the Executive Director in the supervision of the department’s design professionals, in the operation and reporting of the department’s function and in improving the work process and work place. The administrative responsibilities include planning, organizing and managing the daily operation of the unit, quality assurance of the work performed by the unit, human resource management, and supporting staff development. This position will continue to manage capital projects and provide technical expertise in support of the operation of Facilities Planning and Design.
Bachelor’s degree in architecture and two years of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Licensed to practice architecture or landscape architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture or the North Carolina Board of Landscape Architects. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Ability to manage and coordinate the design process for major capital projects (over $500,000). Ability to provide guidance to consulting design professionals. Ability to assess programmatic needs for user group and evaluate projects for compliance with campus development plan principles. Ability to provide technical expertise in the development of budget, schedule, and program statements. Technical architectural knowledge of building design; knowledge of cost estimating; project management skills; effective communication skills including verbal and written.
