Job Description

The Architect leads and manages all campus design direction, setting the overall design vision for campus, while upholding foundations set forward in the campus master plan. The Architect position serves as a member of the Planning, Design & Construction team. The Architect manages the design team, including interior designer and landscape architect positions. This position creates layouts and plans, studies, and inspects existing structures, and develops specifications and selects materials required for renovations, alterations, and new developments to ensure proper conservation and construction of buildings within the University.

Design Services – 40%

• Collects and analyzes data on site conditions for preparation of architectural analysis and plans.
• Writes reports, produces estimated costs, presents proposals to clients for approval, and discusses requirement with clients.
• Develops specifications, conducts materials research, and selects materials required for renovations and alterations. Reviews drawings and documents to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
• Review project documentation to ensure project requirements, quality of design, and compliance with university design standards, as well as appropriate codes and standards.
• Prepares drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
• Completes preliminary architectural studies for new structures and alterations to existing structures and site development.
• Resolves complex design issues with innovative and practical solutions.
• Adheres to site, environment, local and federal regulations, building codes, and local planning and zoning laws.
• Selects appropriate materials for use in designs. Oversees, reviews, and manages required correspondence for all aspects of design work.

Project Managment – 40%

• Demonstrates successful project leadership by defining, developing and meeting project requirements, goals, budget and schedule.
• Take ownership and be the champion of assigned projects.
• Effectively lead project teams of design professionals, facility users, and various university departments by exemplifying high standards.
• Provide organization, leadership, and coordination to the project team.
• Ensure the quality and success of projects by managing consultants’ design and recommend design modifications as required in the best interest of the university.
• Guides and holds accountable 3rd party design professionals and furniture vendors to define scope and deliver projects that meet schedule, budget and scope needs.
• Oversees the management and maintenance of job files, such as resource libraries, schedules, and procurement and budget tracking documents.

Campus Design Standards – 10%

• Works with university clients to design, draft, estimate, and assist with the implementation of interior and architectural services.
• Collaborates as needed in the selection of finishes, fixtures, furniture, and other architectural elements to ensure selections meet needs and all appropriate codes and requirements.
• Contributes to the university design guidelines and technical standards as a subject matter expert in interior design and building aesthetics.
• Report status and coordinate future milestones of projects to all relevant stakeholders and supervisors.
• Runs Architectural/Interior Design Review Team as a subset of the larger Strategic Space Planning Committee.

Personnel Management: – 5%

• Manage design staff.

Other – 5%

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Undergraduate bachelor’s degree.
• 5 to 7 years of professional experience.
• Licensed architect in Arizona.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an Owner’s Architect, preference for Higher Education.
• Have 5+ years of design experience with 3+ years of project management experience.
• Experience directly managing employees.
• Have previous experience working with federal, state, or local government processes.
• Experience in architectural/engineering design and construction practices, i.e. change-orders, RFIs, and submittals.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of architectural design concepts and philosophies.
• Knowledge of current environmental impact studies.
• Knowledge of construction and building codes.
• Knowledge of computer automation software, word processing, and presentation and spreadsheet applications.
• Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD and 3D rendering.
• Organizational and project management skills.
• Coordinates activities, evaluates data, and establishes priorities.
• Supports projects, tracks deliverables, and manages all aspects of a project from inception to completion.
• Plans, analyzes, and coordinates activities and establishes priorities.
• Works independently and within a team environment.
• Provides technical guidance and leadership.

• Drafts renderings of concepts.
