Job Duties

Facilities Development Management, Office of the University Architect, seeks an Architect to act on behalf of the Office of the University Architect as the owners Design Manager during all phases of construction projects.

Essential Duties:
Consult with requesters to determine project requirements, feasibility, alternative options, and prepare a proposed project scope with rough-order-of-magnitude cost estimates. Prepare and/or coordinate preparation of space layout and draw preliminary sketch of the project for presentation and estimating. Coordinate development of detailed working drawings and specifications by an outside design professional after approval for a project has been obtained. Verify that the project goals are met throughout the project. Lead or participate in the selection of outside design professional teams including fee negotiations and contract preparation and participate in the selection of construction managers. Provide advice and information to outside consultants concerning space planning guidelines, architectural guidelines, campus planning, and institutional goals. Coordinate the project scope with landscape architects, historic preservation coordinator, and environmental graphics staff. May supervise activities of subordinates. Use ability to communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform the essential functions of the job.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field AND three (3) years of architectural experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR, NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications:
Evidence of:
Eight (8) years of architectural design experience in interior tenant improvements, renovations and additions (e.g. laboratory, office/classroom)
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Experience in:
Design, hand sketching
Construction cost estimating
Drafting of architectural plans
AutoCAD/Revit software, SketchUp software and Photoshop software
Microsoft Office Suite software
Knowledge of:
International building codes and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code; federal and state facility and code requirements; accessibility standards
Building materials and construction methods; and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering system integration related to building costs

Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Effective verbal and written communication skills with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in-group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings. This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).

Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
