Royce W. Smith

Montana State University
Dr. Royce W. Smith is Dean of the College of Arts & Architecture and Professor of Art History at Montana State University, Bozeman. He came to Montana from Wichita State University where he was professor of contemporary art history and Director of the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries. He earned his M.A. in English from Purdue University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Prior to his return to the United States, Dr. Smith was Associate Lecturer in Art History at the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts in Sydney. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana, Cuba, and has lectured extensively throughout Europe, Africa and Latin America. He was also named a Fulbright Scholar to Paraguay, where he founded, organized and curated the 1st Asunción Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2015. He has served as part of the official curatorial teams of the Bienal de La Habana in Cuba (where he hosted a congressional delegation from the US Senate and House of Representatives for an official exhibition visit) and the Bienal de Curitiba in Brazil. Dr. Smith also serves as a board member of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans (ICFAD).
